PEGASO-GBE.jpg

Regular readers of Biglorryblog will know that lately I've been blogging on the Pegaso Troner, Spain's very own answer to the Daf 95 and the (original) Seddon Atkison Strato, all three of which had the jointly developed Daf/Pegaso 'cabtec' cab. Unfortunately,I've struggled a bit to find some decent pictures of the winged truck but good old Ashley C has come up with the goods.

This shot of a 4x2 high-roof Troner on a UK motorway is a good case in point. Go-ahead continental operator GBE---the company run by Geoff Duvall in the 80s and 90s---before it was bought out by P&O European Transport, bought a whole shed load of Troners, and later Ivecos. And we featured the aforementioned Mr Duvall in a special Commercial Motor Supplement we did on Seddon Atkinson and Pegaso back in the days when yours truly edited CM on a daily basis. (Thankfully, it's now done by Andy Salter who's much younger than me!)

And there's a better story on the Troner to come...

Some time ago I was roadtesting a Daf truck with demo supremo Richard Kingston on the old CM three-day route. After a stop at Gretna we'd then trundle up the A74 to Hamilton where we'd fuel up. However, for some reason there was no diesel at the services and we had to carry on our way towards Cumbernauld on the A90. Not far from Cummins' old service depot we found a filling station and there, parked to one side was a lovely brand new silver-painted, British-reg Troner 6x2 with a reefer trailer. And behind the wheel was the most gorgeous petite blonde...a real looker. As I walked passed she leaned out the window and asked me for directions to a nearby coldstore. And naturally, being rather attracted to her, (well I was alot younger then) I promptly grabbed hold of the mirror arm and hoisted myself up on the step so I could be face-to-face with her, whereupon I found myself gazing directly....into the muzzle of a a quietly growling Doberman....Hmmm step away from the truck Brian, and no one will get bitten. Fortunately, it was very well trained. Sometime later I was looking to do a feature on women drivers and managed to track the aforementioned lady down again (well the snapper did not me). I forget her name....but I certainly remember the dog....

I think I'm right in saying the high-roof was the Troner TX - although I don't recall seeing any flat roof models here in the UK. I've also got something in the back of my head that says someone customised one and did the show scene with it. Sales were always strong in Devon and Cornwall. Pegaso also made cars - one sits just inside the entrance to Iveco's Madrid factory.
