Atkinson and Albion. Old trucks never die says Biglorryblog. They just keep on going in a land down-under.

Old%20Albert.jpg

"AtkiPete Lynch from Oz has sent Biglorryblog these two old-timers and a cheerful 'G'Day' fpor good measure. Pete also says: "A couple of interesting ones I came across recently. 'Old Albert' is still registered and probably used for local towing. Not sure if he is 'all' Albion, perhaps he's now a 'bitser'." Either way it looks in good nick, especially the cab. Mind you with hot weather and not much salt it's no wonder that Classic brits have lasted out there and in NZ.

Meanwhile, on closer inspection I wonder if the cab hasn't been mounted on an old Bedford 4x4? Or did Albion make 4x4 rigids? Answers anorak army please!

Now click through here for a hidden Seddon Atki which should please Chris G.

Peter continues: "A Seddon Atkinson 400, one of a handful sold down here. Not sure about the grille, was this ever used in the UK?"

Great stuff mate! I'll leave others to comment on the grille--although the bird screen was definitely a 'local' option...

Craig S:

A fine Albion that! I reckon it's the original chassis as the rear hub looks correct and the diesel tank with the side mounted guage is definitely standard (I spent the first two years of my driving life looking at that guage at the end of every work day)

Richard Stanier:

Yes that's a proper Albion alright - A Chieftain 71, factory produced 4x4 straight out of Glasgee.

Pete's asked me about the Sed Atki grille before. I don't think it is a factory fitted grille, it resembles one of those after - market jobs that were fitted to 400's to make them look more like 401's.

Barney:

Are you sure the sed atki is not a 300/301 with a 400 twin headlight bumper?

Peter Lynch:

Dont know much about the Seddon Atkinson, other than it has a 240 Gardner so does this make it a 400? I suspect these grilles were fitted by IH in Australia who had buried the Seddon name but kept Atkinson alive.
If is this grille wasnt used in the UK, that is the most likely explanation.

Richard Stanier:

It's definately a 400, rather than a 300/301. The 240 Gardner confirms it, but you can also tell by the ark of the door over the front wing - there's a panel between the two. The door line and wing are flush on 300 / 301 models.

Chris Gardner:

It is indeed a 400, but with a 401 grille. The original style of door handle and the rectangular fuel tank show this, along with the gap between the bumper and the cab panels (the 401 bumper was mounted higher).

The name badge looks like half (the better half!) of one of a 401, whilst it looks like a pair of Mk.1 Atki indicators enhance the front corners!

Alistair:

Hello, all (just looking at this picture of this seddon) thought I would ask if anyone knows of a replacement cab or parts (or suppliers) for my father's seddon atkinson 200 4 wheeler flatbed, it's 1978 and he's driven it since it was 18 month's old, but to keep it going i need a cab. I have read that the 200s were not very relible but this old girl just does'nt want to die, father put around 100,000 miles a year on the clock for over 10 years, and its the same engine and drive train. cheers.

Gavin Close:

Hi Im a huge fan of Atkinson and our family have a few. Mainly a lot of going to restore one day projects ,But at least I got them so they dont get destroyed ,The oldest is a 3/4 cab 1966 model and one of the first RP 3/4 cabs.Anyway I would love to be able to get hold of Peter Lynch and have a chat with him about our simular passion.I hope this is of no inconvienence and I am genuine .
Regards Gavin Close

Chris Gardner:

It would be good to see some pics of them, Gavin!

Peter Lynch:

Gavin , Hope you get those Atkis back on the road and would love to see some photos. The 1966 model sleeper cab is interesting, There is a photo of a similiar unit on page 21 of my book, but not sure whether the cab extension was made in Australia or UK.
If you have one of the first RP cabs it wont have the "ears" on the corners of the cab or they will have been added on later.
