UPS has begun tests with an eco-friendly Modec electric van which will operate from the parcel giant's Camden facility within the London Low Emission Zone. According to UPS: "The quiet, carbon-neutral vehicle is the first of its kind to effectively harness the power of modern, high energy batteries to meet the medium range, high performance requirements of hard working, urban delivery vehicles."
Biglorryblog can't help noticing that Modec is starting to gain some 'traction' (if you'll forgive the obvious pun) with its electric vehicles and with a smart body to boot the wind-cheating whizzer should do well on parcels work in 'The Smoke.' And let's face it, without being unkind, it's alot more attractive than the normal UPS delivery vans...don't you think?

I know the Americans get a lot of flak for their gas guzzlers but some of them are taking green issues seriopusly. For example, and not alot of people know this, UPS operates the largest private alternative fuel fleet in the entire transportation industry, which includes over 1,600 hybrid electric, hybrid hydraulic, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas and propane-powered vehicles globally. Indeed UPS’s use of alternative fuel vehicles dates back to the 1930s with electric vehicles in New York City, and today the company uses alternative fuel vehicles in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, the UK and the US. So there.

Surely I'm not alone in thinking the UPS Big Browns are a pretty tidy looking wagon? There's a certain no-nonsense look to them. Especially with the cab doors open in summer - surely one of the best ways to blast around town. I'm always quietly disappointed when our UPS deliveries arrive in comparatively boring Merc Sprinters.
I've always had an ambition of performing a camper conversion on one. I was gutted to hear you can't get hold of them, though I can't help but admire the lengths to which UPS go to protect their corporate identity...
