New Toyota HiLux at the CV Show 2008----now with even more power...although a slightly cynical Biglorryblog wonders why?

The other day I blogged on the latest Nissan pickup and got an ear-bashing from a Biglorryblog reader on account as it wasn't a BIG lorry. Well true enough, only I can hardly leave the 'little 'uns' out, especially if in the case of the latest Toyota Hilux it's now officially Britain’s most powerful production pick-up.

Yes next week the Commercial Vehicle Show marks the debut of a new stump-pulling Hilux, that according to the PR blather: "With numbers limited to just 500 units, promises to be one of the most sought-after." Apparently it's equipped with the 3.0-litre D-4D engine that already features in the Hilux Invincible---but thanks to a Toyota Motorsport diesel engine performance kit, maximum output is increased to a stonking 197hp which means it can do nought to "Good morning Judge" in 10.5 seconds (or a slothful 11.4 seconds for automatic versions).
There's an even greater hike in torque from 343Nm to 430Nm from 1,600 to 3,200rpm.

I know what you're thinking....WHY? Indeed as there must surely be a limit to how fast you need to carry half a tonne of ballast and a couple of bags of cement....But there are people who want this kind of thing so who is BLB to gainsay it? It seems that last year a Hilux made history by becoming the first car to drive to the Magnetic North Pole. And not a lot of people know that.

meanwhile, back to the present the swift 'ute' comes with 15-inch alloy wheels and stainless steel mesh grille and a special cabin finished in a special two-tone grey leather, with heated front seats. In the meantime I did see something useful on a big American pickup that was parked up at Hatcher on Thursday. About where the fuel filler cap is on the above Hilux, there was a step built into the bodywork so you could climb in to the loadbed without having to go all the way around the back...rather clever I thought.

Give it to top gear and lets see them play with. Is it as good as an older one ???

From "Upgr", in comparison with a standard complete set only on 6 disks in a luggage carrier. Itself has installed Magik System - the domestic signal system with remote and on the timer start.
