How to take good truck photographs. Another lesson and tip from Biglorryblog's favourite snapper!

Tom Cunningham, ace snapper, part-time blogger and BLB's 'most favoured status' truck photographer has sent Biglorryblog a couple of picturwes from his recent photoshoot of the immaculate Benton Bros XF105 for Truck & Driver

He also writes me to say: "Morning Brian, what kind of idiot parks his car behind the Dutch Strator whilst the master BLB photographer is at work? [Errr...not me] I dunno, some people. I would complain bitterly about something like that!"

Anyway he continues: "You mentioned Benton's XF105, so here's a small selection of pix from yesterday's T&D shoot. I had none other than vintage lorry expert, aviation historian and BLB contributor Bill Taylor along for company/unpaid assistance/free training."

Tom's obviously got down low--he likes laying around on the ground....! Anyroadup he tells me: "I chose the 'Telegraph Road' location for many reasons: Don’t be scared of using road markings; don't be frightened by the thought of using rising heat - I had the rapidly melting tarmac stuck to my arms and legs; and last but not least, try to use obstacles like telegraph poles to your advantage. If anyone’s interested (I know Bill will be), it was shot at 400mm, ISO 100, shutter speed of 400/sec and an aperture of f5.6. The front 3/4 with the rape seed in the background is actually the same stretch of road, just shot from a completely different angle."

And here's Tom's Top Tip of the month: "Forget the yard. Take a ride out in the car and check the surrounding area. These locations were no more than two miles from Benton's yard. It's all out there... but only if you can be bothered to find it! "

Grest stuff Tom, thanks.

Bill Taylor:

That was an awesome day, for many reasons. My own efforts with a camera are well and truly put to shame by the ace snapper and to watch him in action was inspirational. I put my foot in the proverbial when I announced my analysis of the day - that all you need to do to take stunning pics is lay in the road and use a telephoto lens. If Tom's look could have killed .....! I can't wait to see the full monty in T&D.
