On the subject of trucks that find themselves in the third lane of the motorway either inadvertently or otherwise (and the recent posting from'Crane King Cog') I've been sent this picture of an artic by Neil Temple who says: "Hi Brian, I remember Ashley sending you a few pictures of a crazy German driver in the outside lane of the motorway through tight roadworks a while back and I saw something similar today. Feel free to correct me on this one but as far as I was aware HGV's aren't allowed in the 3rd lane of a 3+ lane motorway. Clearly in the attached picture taken earlier today on the M6 southbound (taken by my passenger of course), the Royal Mail driver IS in the outside lane."
Neil adds that the driver obviously wasn't 'a foreigner' (unless the Royal mail is employing Eastern European drivers which I am sure they're not) and would presumably know better, before adding: "I must admit that this is the first time I've ever seen this first hand and I spend a fair amount of time on the motorway."
And BLB's take on it? Well to be charitable perhaps he just got in the wrong lane in the roadworks and found it hard to get back over. What do you think?

I've often seen seven and half-tonners doing this but seldom the big boys. One can only presume that this chap was loaded with First Class letters!

I'm sick of seeing car & van drivers towing trailers in the third lane. Postman Pat must have been on a mission to get it there quicker !!!

Its just like the rest of Britain today. You can shout, and put as many laws on the book as you can think of, but if you don't enforce them, you needn't bother in the first place.

Try joining the M60 at Bredbury heading north and NOT be in the third lane. The slip road enters from the RIGHT.

I think George has a point here. The picture could be decieving. There are several junctions (merging motorways???) in the uk that will put three lanes together and suddenly 'bloody ell - i'm out in the fast lane doing 50!!!' I admit it is a buzz for a second or two, but with rapidly-forming traffic behind, the 'fast-lane feeling' is destined to only last for a matter of seconds until you grab for a lower gear and head left...

I must admit that if the driver had no choice then i'd have a bit more sympathy with him. However he just pulled out from the middle lane in an attempt to make more progress as the outer lane was moving faster. He'd been over there for at least 3 miles when I got close enough to grab a pic.
