Ancient Aussie Atkinsons on Biglorryblog...complete with neat roping and sheeting.

'Atki Pete' Lynch has sent me a couple of Golden Oldies starting with what he thinks are the first sleeper cab Atkis. Indeed, he tells me: " G'day Brian,  someone might be able to prove me wrong. Love that tarping job, might be finished off with a big shoelace bow at the back. If the photo comes out grainy, send it back and I will try again. Cheers Pete." No it's fine Pete now click through here for a classic Atki still going strong..

Now here's another one that Rob Laurent from Queensland sent Pete and hence to me. Pete says: "Rob is a Leader man but knows my weakness for the old Preston cabs.  This one is still in service as a yard shunter at Toowomba. Best not slam that door when you get out!"

Peter Lynch:

B+W Photo is from the late 50's ( I believe) and it wasnt taken in England.

Chris Gardner:

SOMEwhere (2 house moves later)I have a large factory photograph showing an 8-wheel Atki, left hand drive, 8LW Gardner displayed at a Motor Show in, I think, 1952. It has the front and rear dashes but no cab superstructure, but the extended rear dash incorporates a splendid looking domestic sprung mattress!

I've no idea where it went to, but obviously not Down Under with its left hand drive.

Peter Lynch:

I think you are on the right track Chris but the LH drive has me confused. Maybe the photo was reversed ??

Vic Hungerford:

I don't think you need to have a weakness for the Preston cabs, Pete; they had plenty of weaknesses of their own!

I love the look of those 8-wheelers, they really look tough; I've never seen those cabs before, South African, maybe?

I await your answer with great interest.

Peter Lynch:

Spot on Vic, ..to quote the add
" Two recent Atkinson 8LW powered 8 Wheelers in train for Nyasaland from Johannesburg: These two are additions to an existing fleet of 25 Atkinson vehicles now operating with the Limbe Garage and Transport Co Ltd "
I think they must have been offering sleeper cabs in South Africa a few years before the Aussie Atkinsons had them. Might well be the same units in Chris's photo.
