Classic Foden trucks...'The Boss' tells us all to stop moaning...we've never had it so good on Biglorryblog!

lowminers.jpg

I've had this excellent B&W shot sent to me by 'The Boss' who says: "Following my last contribution BLB regular Barney asked 'Where was Dave Lee?' Well he is sat alongside me at the moment.Dave continues to take many photographs and still has articles in various publications but he has visited to swap a few photos relating to W.F.Miners & Sons.which, when I get the time, will feature in one of our transport mags as 'companies from the past'."

Now that sounds like a good idea...I'll have a chat with young Will Shiers. Meanwhile, for a pie, what's the truck?

Anyway, 'The Boss' continues: "Which for those who wore rose tinted glasses then and now was the 'good old days'. I just include this Foden six-wheeler for today. Great looking lorry, and advise you all to stop moaning about the state of our industry, you've never had it so good!" Well that's us told then!  Now click through here for some fascinating facts on how much a truck cost back then...

'The Boss' says: "According to Stephen Miners, whose Dad Fred is leaning against the lorry, that truck cost £8,000----while houses in Ashburton cost £3000! Quite a turnaround at today's prices, or to put it another way one house equals four lorries." Hmmm, just a pity that the value of those houses went up...as the truck's went down!

Chris Gardner:

Would that be the S34 cab?

Andy Davis:

Could this Miners had "joined forces"with Brian Harris to become the well-known Harris+Miners of the 70,s by any chance?

Yes, Chris, it is the S34 tilt cab.

Vic Hungerford:

A Foden, of course, and this is the S34 cab. The S36 cab was almost identical but was a non-tilt version of the S34 and had twin headlights instead of the rectangular units fitted to the S34. You cannot tell the model number from the photo, as this depended partly on which engine was fitted to the truck. Fodens were fitted with the S34 and S36 cabs in the mid-1960s.

Baker:

Help!

I have a 1979 Foden 4x6 in Malawi, East Africa. I run an NGO and can't find parts for the gearbox. Any ideas?
