Disposal of obsolete British Army trucks...Biglorryblog has the story and a quick pie quiz...

camo082.JPG

Word reaches Biglorryblog that Witham (Specialiist Vehicles), the official vehicle sales and marketing agents for the UK MoD has opted (perhaps not altogether unsurprisingly) for MAN TGX as its new fleet replacements---the first time the company has chosen to run a one-marque fleet. The Grantham-based operation already has three TGX 26.440 BLS 6x2/2 in service, with two more due in November.

One of the new fleet's first tasks is to collect the now-obsolete MoD fleet of Bedford support vehicles (and for a quick pie, name the models you can see in the two pictures) for onward distribution to foreign governments. The old Bedfords are being replaced, in part, by over 7,000 MAN support vehicles of various configurations. (Now do you see why Witham might want to run MANs?) Now click through here for more and a picture of the new MAN military truck.

And here are a couple of those aforementioned MAN getting nice and dirty. Meanwhile, MAN's relationship with the MoD was further strengthened recently after it received confirmation from the Government's Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) organisation that its Support Vehicle programme has been declared 'In Service', thus confirming MAN's fulfillment of the project as being on time, within budget and to the correct quality standards. Witham's own purchase criteria was not dissimilar to this, as Sales Director, Douglas Landy explains to BLB, "The MAN TGX is a top-quality truck---built to last, cost effective and with excellent back-up from the MAN dealer network." So there you have it.

The two military trucks would be the Bedford TM and the Bedford MK 4x4, its hard to tell from the angle but the TM looks like it may be a 6x6

Vic Hungerford:

The ones on the trailers are Bedford (or AWD) MK models, which was the 4x4 model of the civilian TK. They were in fact basically the same as the old RL model but fitted with a TK cab.

The one on the other side of the MAN looks like a 4x4 (or 6x6) version of a TM Bedford, but I have never seen one of these and don't know what they were called.

Sorry to disagree, and only on a minor issue , but the MK cab I believe is based around the larger Bedford KM cab

(having sleptin all 3 variants the MK/KM cab is larger)

Nutstrangler:

Additionally, the RL was petrol engined, whereas the MK was a diesel.

WILLIAM EWING:

I AM IN THE PROCESS OF RESEARCHING THE COST OF MILITARY TRUCKS AND VEHICLES DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. COULD YOU PLEASE HELP. BILL EWING.
