Mushroom farming...you'll get a lightning-fast compost delivery service from SW Adamson, especially with their FH16s says Biglorryblog!

Have you noticed how Volvo FH16.660s are like buses? You wait a long time for one to turn up--then a whole shed-load of them appear all at once. At least that's how it seems to Biglorryblog who learns that  family-run mushroom compost haulier S W Adamson Transport, based in Middleham, North Yorkshire, is set to become one of the UK's largest operators of FH16's, have recently placed orders which will take their fleet of FH16-660's to eleven. And here they are, and what a fantastic line-up to boot! I can also tell you that the majority are tag-axle six-wheelers, specced for their improved manoeuvrability and traction. And all of them have been supplied by Crossroads Truck and Bus at Boroughbridge.

Owner Stuart Adamson tells me: "We specify the FH16-660 because they're on top of the job." Well I guess they would be---hauling mushroom compost! But I digress--and back to Stuart. "You have to control your costs and they give good fuel economy, there's no need for the driver to thrash them, and they take everything in their stride." Well BLB certainly isn't going to argue with that! Meanwhile, Stuart adds, "The 660 is great for looking after the drivers. It's an all-round winner. It has I-Shift, which is absolutely brilliant and with the high horsepower, there's even less gear changing, therefore less stress on the vehicles and drivers." Mmmmm......I can't see Stuart having too much of a problem with recruiting drivers. In fact he's probably got a waiting list that goes around the block. Anyway click through here for more....

As mentioned Stuart's company hauls mushroom compost for one of the largest producers in the country. Drivers collect from the factory in Bawtry, near Doncaster and transport fresh compost daily to mushroom farms throughout the UK using ther aforementioned FH16.660s.  This is supplemented by hauling a range of chicken and pig farming-related materials - chicken sheds, feeders, drinkers and equipment to control the egg-catching machinery. Sounds like a scene from BLB's favourite film 'Chicken Run'...."Say after me Mr Tweedie...it's all in yer head!"

Either way a pretty 'awesome' fleet I'd say...right MP?

Barney:

Martin P might be able to substantiate this fact but I believe that at one time Ralph Davies had the biggest fleet of FH16's in the world.I think for this country Heanour Heavy Haulage has the biggest fleet of FH16's at this time (I don't know about 660's though).

Martin Phippard:

Barney, I am not sure about the biggest fleet of FH16s in the world but I understand that he certainly had the biggest fleet (of 16-litre Volvos) in Europe at one time. It was and is fantastic operation with some great people and yes, I was proud to be the salesman involved!

Andy Davis:

Yes Barney, the same Ralph Davies also had the biggest fleet in the world of "MACK MAGNUM,S"too!!
When he ordered his 1st Renault Magnum 420 4x2 unit,s,he made sure that they got all the Renault badges removed, then had MACK badges on the front of the Magnum cab,s below the windscreens!!!
I,ve got photo,s of his 1st 2"MACK MAGNUM,S",so
