Sentinel Steamers on Biglorryblog...but what's that Bedford doing there too asks Biglorryblog?

AtkiPete has been a busy bloke--he's sent me a couple of pictures and says: "G'day Brian, here are a couple of fine English lorries not relying on expensive diesel or petrol. Don't laugh, they may soon come back in force." Now click through here for an unlikely 'alternative fuel' truck down-under...

I'm not quite sure what Pete is suggesting here...does this venerable Bedford run on something other than petrol or diesel? If so what? Rape seed oil? Castlemaine XXXX? Hunter Valley Sauvignon Blanc? What's the story mate?

Dave Walker:

I know a guy in Tierra Del Fuego who is looking at resurecting some out of use Sentinels just for this reason. I cant contact him but last time i saw him in the uk that was what they were trying to do. I sadly dont even know what sort of Sentinels they are.

Peter Lynch:

That tiny little red sticker on the number plate is a clue.

Vic Hungerford:

LPG, Pete?

Peter Lynch:

Now you didnt come down in the last shower did you Vic! The Beddy is running on LPG, currently 67 cents a litre vs $1.80 for diesel.

Vic Hungerford:

Looks like an LPG tank on the side. I presume it was originally a petrol engine, not a diesel?

Peter Lynch:

This one would have a petrol engine, probably a 308 V8 Holden car motor. They also fitted the smaller 253 V8 Holden and a 292 6 cylinder Chev out here. The Holden engines didnt last very long in truck service and running on LPG tended to burn valves.
However since the cost of diesel has gone through the roof people are looking at LPG or CNG again. They are even running diesel engines on a misture of diesel and LPG. ie diesel via the injectors and LPG fed in via the air intake.
