There's a pie up for grabs for anyone who can tell BigLorryBlog what's going on here

The year is 1912 - and that's all the information we can give you on this fantastic old photo.

What do you reckon's going on here, and why's it taking place in the middle of the street?

Is this some sort of mobile sandblasting service?

And most curious of all, why's that bloke wearing a bucket on his head?

Vic Hungerford:

It certainly looks as if he is doing some sandblasting, and the bucket on his head is obviously an early type of breathing apparatus, you can see the airline in the top; not too much different from what sandblasters use today, actually.

As to why it is being done in the middle of the road, I suppose the answer is "Why not?" It doesn't look as if there was too much traffic around although it would probably have frightened the horses.
