I found this picture in a box of old magazines at the back of a cupboard in the office - and because it doesn't have a caption on the back, I'm afraid I can't identify it. But I'm extremely confident that somebody out there will be able to tell us exactly what it is, when it was built and whether it's still on the road today.
The only clues I can give you are the words 'Crow Carrying Company' on the door, and the 'Cummins Diesel' badge on the grille. Over to you for a pie.

This is almost certainly a Diamond T, dating from World War 2, it may have been built as a wrecker or converted from a drawbar tractor or artic. After sale from the military many of these received new engines as a modernisation exercise or for economy reasons. Following a case of terminal rust in the cab one Scottish council fitted one of their wrecker/snow ploughs with a cab from a Ford Transit mk 1 which strangely did not look out of place
Looks like an ex US Army Diamond T? - By the way, whats in the Pie this week?
Definetly a ww2 Diamond T 6x4 98O/981 EX-tank transporter ballast tractor. Think cabs off something else ,has a bit of a Mack look to it.
British Army had 2000 of these in ww2 and the last not retired until 70's due to cost of replacement. We've only had five marques of tank transporters in UK forces ever-Scammell Pioneer,Diamond T, Thorneycroft Antar,Scammell Commander and now Oshkosh's.
And Crow Carrying Co. was a well-respected and substantial tanker operator, based in east London. Am I right in thinking that they disappeared into TDG?

Hi there, Yes that is an ex ww2 Diamond T tank transporter tractor with a Mac cab it had 11 titre Hurculese motor and a Dale Holmes twin boom wrecker unit on the back The reason I can be so certain is that this vehcule was in service when I worked for Crow Carrying at their Silvertown Depot in 1971, and I drove it several times.
Hi there,
I worked at Crow Carrying Co in 1956 on for a few years at the Harts Lane Barking depot. I would love some information on Crows.
I think their buildings were built in 1953, and were demolished after a fairly short life.
If that breakdown truck was around before Crows moved to Silvertown, Jim Denyer would have been the driver
hi yes i john i can give u plenty of information and pics on crows
this is my email clintonyorkie@hotmail.co.uk . regards clint
Hi, it was indeed a Diamond T, it had a top speed of just 25mph hence why the engine was replaced with a Cummings to reach 40-45mph, it was purchased after Crow's moved from Barking Essex to Silvertown Way London E16, I was an apprentice mechanic at the time known as "Mussels" hehehe!!
It was commonly known by all as "The Dodler"
