Biglorryblog has his blogging co-evil 'World Truck Blog' (AKA Ollie Dixon) to thank for this story. And I heartily recommend that you visit his excellent blog via this link

Meanwhile he tells me that Detroit Diesel has launched the second North American version of Daimler's planned global Heavy Duty Engine Platform (HDEP). The 12.8-litre six-pot will  by the end of 2009. Designated the DD13, it replaces the old MBE4000 12-litre lump next year. And all you engine pedants will know that the MBE4000 has the same block as the OM457 12-litre engine used in the Axor in Europe.

The DD13 joins the previously-launched DD15 and in the near future Ollie tells me that we'll also see a 16-litre DD16 model. However, he says: "It remains to be seen how much of the latest DD13 engine will be replicated when Mercedes-Benz launches its European version of the HDEP range, likely, CM hears, to arrive some time during 2010. Given the current parlous state of European truck order intake, the OEMs might welcome the early adoption of Euro VI as a stimulus to falling demand, a fact that has led some observers to speculate that Merc's HDEP may be launched in Europe in Euro VI guise."

Ollie advises me that: "The new US DD13 diesel will be offered with power ratings ranging from 350 to 450 hp, and boasts peak torque output of between 1828 to 2,234 Nm. It shares the DD15's Amplified Common Rail System (ACRS), but does away with the turbo compounding featured on the DD15 as a result of the need to use rear PTO capabilities. All told, the 13-litre engine weighs in at around 180 kg less than the 15-litre model, but is described by Detroit Diesel as being 'slightly heavier' than the outgoing MBE 4000 (known as the OM457 in Europe). Whether or not this weight penalty includes the additional kilos piled on by the SCR equipment due to be fitted to all DD series engines in time for EPA 10 is not known, but the DD13 has seen an extension in service intervals out to 50,000 miles."

Hmmmm......sounds like an impressive lump and that DD16 is likely to be a real BIG banger.

Barney

Will any other manufacture be ready for Euro 6 in 2010?
I don't think these new engines will have the
same acoustics as the old "2" stroke V8 Detroit's or "Green Leakers" I think the australians called them.

Barney,

Ya've done it now! You've aroused the inner demon in me! I would like to make this very clear - I LOVE THE 2 STROKE DETROITS! From the 3-71 all the way to the 12V92, I would give me left nut to buy a 2 stroker!

If it isn't a 2 stroke, it ain't a Detroit!

Joe
