Alex Saville in Scotland has sent me this real gem and says: "Hello Brian, you know that sometimes you remember something (totally unimportant!) and it bugs you until you find the answer?" (Tell me about it Alex..but I've interrupted you) "Well, here's what's bugging me at the moment! For some unknown reason, I remembered that many years ago I read in a magazine (either Truck or CM) a story that Scammell had an order for some tractor units for the USA. Now my late uncle used to work at Albion in Glasgow and I remember he gave me a Leyland Group magazine that showed a LAD cabbed Leyland working in New York City. So it was only a small leap for Scammell to export vehicles over there (more or less beefed up Leyland Roadtrains?).
I put a post on a Transport website I go on to and one of the members came up with the attached photo from the Classic Commercial Motor Vehicle site www.ccmv.fotopic.net. So I thought to myself, this is one for Brian and the Biglorryblog! Maybe you could post the subject and ask if anyone knows what happened to these vehicles. Did they go to the USA or did they end up somewhere else. You never know, this could end up a good story for T&D.
What is the e-mail address for the Biglorryblog? Can't find it by myself!"
Well Alex there is no separate e-mail address for BLB---send it to me, or post a comment on the site. Anyway BLB Anorak Army---who can help Alex in his quest? The Mountaineer does ring a vague bell with me..but thats a far as it goes... Mr Tuck, one for you?

I think this one from the same website looks better, but the previous model looked much better still. http://ccmv.fotopic.net/p42756644.html

As Alan says, the Mountaineer name was revived when Scammell were approached by a USA based entrepreneur to market their products over there. Simply a standard Scammell S26 (and in now way just a beefed up Roadtrain - it was built for strength and the only similarity is the T45 style of cab)the project never gained fruition as Daf took Leyland over and the Watford Scammell plant was closed. A sad day for many including yours truly.
