I'm grateful to Rod Simmonds for these pictures (and contragulations from BLB and all the anorak army Rod on the new addition to the Simmonds fleet!) I rather like this series of phtos which shows you hpow to get a quad-quad artic around a corner...must be great on the tyres! So here it is going....
Going....
Going...
Going....
Nearly there....
Done it! Now click through here for a close upshot of it and words from 'Insider Ian' telling me all about the fabulous Tipulator trailer!
Insider Ian tells Biglorryblog: "The K100e towing this new steelbro quad 'tipulator' [now that's a GREAT name for a trailer BLB] is an ex-Mike Lamberts Logger, powered by a 425hp N14 Cummins the K110E used to pull a 5 axle b-train but was taken off that work and now pulls the latest quad tipper on a run from Auckland south to Hamilton---then back up to Auckland.
Specially designed by Road Master Trailers the Tipulator has a six-stage ram and runs on super singles. The quad trailer plooks particularly impressive behind the tri-drive Kenworth K100E and it is currently the highest cube trailer on the road at the moment!" Great stuff Rod and Ian BLB is impressed (until I have to get it round a 160-dgree bend!)

I don't understand all the fuss about getting quad-quads around corners; you just turn the steering wheel and around they go, honestly! Quad semi-trailers always have two steering axles, occasionally the front and rear ones but more commonly the 2 rear axles.
The SWC tractor is a tri-drive single steer tractor unit, but this is because it is an ex-logger where tri-drive can be useful or necessary in the bush. It is more common for the tractor units to be twin-steer and tandem drive.
We have 2 quad tractor units and a selection of quad semi-trailers in the company I work for, and they are no problem; we can do a U-turn inside the inter-island ferries easily.
