Not the easiest of shots to take--nor the safest of places to be. Which is why I rather like this photo of a new Vito van...and why I probably need ace snapper Tom Cunningham to tell me how easy it is to get a blurred shutter speed setting on a digital camera. Anyway it perfect exemplifies the fact that truck operators nationwide are benefiting from a new pay-as-you-go roadside rescue and recovery service which is being managed by Potters Bar-based Lantern Recovery Specialists www.lanternrecovery.org

Biglorryblog learns that RHA Rescue rharescue@lrs.uk.com has been set up to cater for all vehicles owned by members of the Road Haulage Association, from trucks and vans to private cars, motorcycles and mobility scooters. Members of the RHA's Rescue and Recovery Group will be given first call on incidents in their area. So if a vehicle belonging to an RHA member breaks down, chances are it will be a fellow member who comes to the rescue.

Commenting on the lead role being played by Lantern, RHA Rescue and Recovery Group Chairman Richard Goddard tells me: "I'm delighted that one of our own members has been appointed to manage this vital RHA service. It proves beyond doubt that members can work together, regardless of their specialist sector within the UK transport industry."

The Vito is a recent addition to Lantern's 250-strong fleet and it comes with a folding RDT (Rapid Deployment Trailer), which is stowed just inside the rear tailgate and can be winched in and out of the back of the vehicle. Another new arrival is a 26-tonne Mercedes Axor 2529L, which has an eight-car transporter body built by Worldwide Recovery Systems. Commenting on the launch of RHA Rescue, Lantern's Business Development Manager Mike Kenny says: "The new service has made a flying start. In partnership with the 500 agents we manage nationwide, we're providing RHA members with an added benefit that's been very well received." So a match made in heaven then.....

I know Tom will describe it better but if I wanted that effect, I'd probably put it onto a tripod and set it at the widest aperture (and thus the slowest shutter speed) but ensuring it's on one shot re the focusing servo. Wait for something big to drive past and press the cable release. You could also put it on multi shot so it took many shots as the moving vehicle drove past. Even hand held, you could put it onto TV and use something like a 60th for shutter speed or even a shade less if you don't shake and just wait for something to move behind it.
I recall a picture of mine - about 16 years ago - taken of a DTS (Dalton Transport Services) Scania 93 being used on a double page spread by Truck of such an effect. The difference was a red car drove across the front of the lorry and it was so dull I got a lovely red streak across the dark vehicle. Was I chuffed with that.
