Bob Tuck has sent me these shots and says: "Brian, I feel sure you may recall a great feature I did a year or three back in Truck & Driver on the Red Arrows. I spent a great couple of days with their support team which saw us travelling from their base at RAF Scampton (near Lincoln) across to Blackpool Airport in this well turned out Daf curtainsider outfit they have. They were servicing the planes as they flew round the country."
Bob adds: "I'm not going to repeat the story (apart from wax lyrical about the sound and smell coming from the aircraft) but I would love you to repeat these shots of the Scammell S26 tankers they had at their Scampton base."
"Actually these were amongst the last batch of official Scammells ever made. Leyland Daf brought the Scammell name out of retirement in '93 (I think) and used it on these refuellers. As you can see, they had automatic boxes and on my test drive of one around the perimeter were an absolute doddle to drive."
"Happy Days" says Bob....now click through here for another Red Arrows plane and quick pie quiz....
So what is it? And what do they fly now...?
And a final shot of the Scammell.

Sorry, these aviation questions are too easy.
The old Red Arrow was a Gnat, very nice bit of kit, but they now use BAE Hawks which are faster, better mpg, quieter in the cab etc etc. And in service with the RAF as advanced trainers which helps.
Current plane: BAe Hawk
Previous plane: Folland Gnat
The current fleet of refuellers are based on a modified Dennis Eagle Elite 6x4 chassis
