AtkiPete Lynch has sent me this shot of a little Isuzu following my recent blog on the forthcoming producitivity test of a 7.5, 12 and 18-tonne Isuzu. Pete says: "G'day Brian. Not so chirpy this week, have been busy at work and the shocking bushfires seem to have dampened everyones spirits. Will be interested to read your forthcoming epistle on the new Isuzu range. I hired the smallest one of these (picture here) to move some furniture and found it ideal for local work."  However he adds: "There are a couple of drawbacks, the unit in the photo is limited to 4500kg gross ( maximum for car licence holders down here) but actual payload only comes to less than a ton. With a couple of well built assistants on board it would only be about 600kg legal! The one I got was the 150hp AMT equipped version and it only seems like a couple of years back when 150hp was considered over the top for an 8-tonner. In my case the AMT transmission seemed to be out of adjustment, backing off just before every up shift and often requiring manual intervention. At one stage it was in 6th ( top) gear cruising at 50kph, then a couple of downshifts needed when acceleration was called on.. Cheers Pete."
Sounds like a ghost in the machine mate as they usually work well. And I can certainly remember when 150hp was considred more than enough for an 16-tonner! Didn't the old Leyland Clydesdale have a 150hp engine?  Meanwhile, we've all been shocked by the TV pictures of the bushfires and BLB's thoughts go to all those down-under who have lost homes and loved ones. My old mate Graham Thompson, ex-PR supremo for CraneFruhauf migrated to Oz some time back and became a volunteer fireman---and I understand from Steve Gray who spoke to Graham that he's been involved in the firefighting.

Pete,

Remember the last AMT equipped Isuzu you hired??? I think I made a comment about it....and I personally don't think these newer units are much better. Although they made a couple of alterations, for me they weren't big and hefty enough to allow the heavier weights onto them!
