The big news in August 1972 was the arrival of the first Toyota light commercial to be sold on these shores - the Toyota Hi-ace.
'The truck promises to be a high-performance machine,' writes the Motor Transport reporter, 'with a 90hp, 1.6-litre engine.' Praise is also given to the four-speed synchromesh 'box, the GT-style high-back driver's seat, and the independent front suspension. However the reporter isn't quite so keen on the high-compression ratio, double-barrel carburettor, which required four-star petrol. 'It is more suited to car operation than that of commercial work.'
So, was the Hiace the first Japanese commercial vehicle in the UK?
