Browsing through the Volvo image gallery for a Volvo VN picture to go with the recent blog of VTNA's EPA 10 engine what should I find but these old archive shots of the original Volvo White-GMC integral sleeper which was based on the old White Road Commander cabover cab with a bonnet stuck on the front creating the first modern truly 'integral' US class 8 sleeper cab tractor ---and boy was it different to the industry standard tractors with separate sleeper boxes on the back. I'm sure Martin 'Keeper of the Flame' Phippard can add a bit more through the comments section...should he so wish!

And in the best tradition of those high-quality US truck brochure shots they've all been taken in stunning locations...as I recall the integral Volvo White sleeper (the GMC bit came later) was a classic niche product that US operators blew either hot or cold over..but never luke warm...

To me it was a real looker--and light years ahead of the competition....

Not surprisingly it was quite an aerodynamic truck too---or at least for a US class 8 tractor of the 80s! Indeed I blogged on this topic not that long ago. Now click through here for a John Wayne pie quiz.....get of your horse and drink yer milk.....

OK, so ignoring the Volvo VN in the foreground where is this location...and what famous western movie director used it in many of his classic films...? And for one more, name one of them! There's three pies for you already...I'm too generous.

I believe the location is Left Thumb in Monument Valley Utah. I can not do the director or movie. Thanks for a neat blog!
