And as if to prove the Mercedes Econic isn't afraid of getting dirty this show it's more than just a pretty face amongst bin wagons. And doubtless the Econic's on/off-road performance helped persuade Down District Council in
According to the PR blurb: "Operatives [whatever happened to binmen BLB?] who have to board and alight their vehicle constantly during collection rounds appreciate the fact that the Econic's spacious cab is very low and easily accessed by a folding bus-type door on the nearside." And council tax payers? Well they're "Benefiting from the fact that their local authority's new Econics are proving highly cost-effective to run. The first unit, for example, has now been in service a little over a year and had only one set of new tyres." Sort of bin there, done that you might say?
Meanwhile, Garage Officer Brendan McClean explains to BLB one of its two 26-tonne 2629LL Econics (there's a third on on the way) is on urban domestic work "Where, with all of the scrubbing on kerbs around the estates, we'd normally expect a truck to go through two and possibly three sets of tyres in that time." Fuel-efficient and quiet in operation, thanks largely to its fully air-suspended chassis, the Econic is also equipped with an on-board weighing system - "It's excellent and unlike some others very accurate," confirms Brendan who adds, "this means we're able to maximise productivity without any risk of exceeding the legal gross weight for the vehicle."
