Peter Murray, a member of Biglorryblog's Aussie 'irregulars' has provided some answers to the recent posting on the 17 roadtrain round-up sent to me by Gary Rchards. Pter says: "Brian, atached are 2 more photos of the same 'road train convoy' on the Blog Site. This series of photos have been in circulation for some years - so they date back a bit. They are of a single lift of cattle from Helen Hills Station in the Northern Territory (Australia). And there are 17 triple, double deck road train units involved.
Peter continues: " for sure - I suspect this was a shipment headed for live export via the Darwin Port. On rough figures there is probably around 2,600 head being loaded on this station - which would join another 12,000 (upwards) which is what the cattle carrying ships can carry.Or---like someone else has suggested--- it could be a destocking operation caused by drought, where cattle have to be moved to another location that has water and feed stocks." Now click through here for more...
"In the past 6 months - there has been 3 live export ships loaded out of Townsville Queensland - ranging from 16,000 head to 23,000 as the biggest ever. And that was loaded in just 5 days. So you can see how it is necessary to operate convoys like in these photos - to get the job done. It would require something like 10 of these convoys to load one large ship!
Peter R Murray."
