There's a price for going green and according to Volvo Trucks North America the price tag for one of its trucks with an EPA 10 engine will include a surcharge of $9,600. According to the company "This cost is associated with the new technology necessary to meet the strict new emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks, which take effect January 1, 2010." Scott Kress, senior vice president, sales & marketing at VTNA tells Biglorryblog: "Our emissions reduction technology for 2010 will bring immediate benefits for the air we breathe without using emissions credits, while at the same time significantly improving fuel economy for our customers. Volvo Trucks will achieve near-zero emissions of NOx with selective catalytic reduction (SCR). We have made substantial investments in research and development to accomplish these extraordinary goals." Now click through here for more....
Meanwhile, BLB can report that the surcharge---which in my humble opinion should be picked up by the ultimate beneficiaries of road transport i.e. the consumer---will apply to new trucks built with Volvo D11, D13 and D16 engines, as well as those with the Cummins ISX. All of those engines will be equipped with Selective Catalytic R back up with onboard diagnostics (OBD) systems required by the new emissions regs.
