Word reaches Biglorryblog that one of Britain's leading kayak manufacturers has splashed out on two stunning new vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. Yes, East Sussex-based Perception Kayaks www.perception.co.uk, which as everyone knows has played a key role in the development of kayaking in the UK and Europe, has just taken delivery of two new Mercedes Vito Sport 115CDIs - proving all those weisenheimers wrong in that you can mix business with pleasure. Especially as the Vito is powered by a punchy 150hp, 2.2-litre, common-rail turbo-diesel engine, while other goodies include cruise control, air-con, a leather steering wheel and gearshift, electric windows and mirrors, as well as 17-inch alloy wheels with low profile tyres, fog lights and extensive chrome trim.

While both are finished in eye-catching metallic silver one is a conventional long-bodied van, while the other is a long-bodied 'Dualiner', which boasts a second row of seats. The new arrivals have lined up alongside three other Mercedes - two Vitos from the previous model generation and a larger Sprinter. "We pride ourselves on producing a first-class product and our stylish new Vito Sports can only help to underpin our reputation for quality," sales manager André Goldsmith tells Biglorryblog. The new Vito Sports are now being used to transport its market-leading products to dealers and promotional events across the country. Both are fitted with towbars and pull trailers that carry up to 20 kayaks and open canoes. The company also puts racks on the optional roof rails to transport a further six boats. And with seating for up to six people, the Dualiner also doubles as luxury transport for VIP visitors to the firm's high-tech production plant in Uckfield.

"We've been running Mercedes-Benz vans since 2000 and have found them to be fantastically reliable," says Andre, who adds "Not only is the Vito better looking than its rivals, it's also more comfortable and car-like to drive. We chose the Sport model because it's such an eye-catching package. It has a very classy look and grabs people's attention. Our kayaks are stylish and feature-rich, so it makes sense for our vans to share that ideal. There is the added benefit that they mesh perfectly with the cool lifestyle that goes with paddling."

Well it's certainly moved on since Biglorryblog went canoeing in the Grand Union canal in Hemel Hempstead with the Chaulden Scouts....

two stroke

This reminds me of the time a mate of mine tried to fit a webasto night heater in his canoe to keep his feet warm. The wee boat caught fire - which only goes to prove the old saying that "You cannot have your kayak and heat it" boom boom.
