King of the Castle? Browsing through the Daimler Global media site I found this story on the latest Actros multi-wheelers although I can't help feel this isn't a new story as I'm sure my mate Andy Salter reported on it last year. But I could be wrong. Anyroadup as Biglorryblog is in the information business I clearly can't ignore it so away we go.

The short version is that the new Construction Actros range builds on the changes incorporated into the 'Third Generation' Actros tractor which was voted Truck of the Year 2009.

And it has a whole load of tweaks to make it happy in the mud including PowerShift Offroad - a special mission-matched version of Merc's two-pedal auto. You can even order it with a range of bodies too.

The Construction Actros range includes new tippers, all-wheel-drive tippers, concrete mixers, tractors and special-purpose chassis units come with a choice of two, three or four axles and with nine power outputs from V6 and V8 lumps spanning the range from 320hp to 598hp. You get to choose between a bread-and-butter 4x2 rigids to a mud-plugging 8x8 all-wheel drive.

As mentioned the new range features the latest PowerShift Offroad automated transmission with specially adapted off-road programming, featuring ultra-short shift times and correspondingly minimal interruptions in traction thereby stopping you from getting bogged down on difficult ground, or from losing speed on steep uphill gradients. It also features a "Rocking mode", four reverse gears and an integrated tilt sensor - whatever that is... Presumably to tell you when you about to go up a 1:4 with a full load on! To cope with the harsh conditions on construction sites, the auto box is fitted with extremely robust forged steel linkages.

The new construction Actros comes with a three-millimetre-thick, high-strength stainless steel guard plate that protects the radiator and engine against damage. You also get a neat pivoting step tio allow you to climb up and clear the SH one T off the windscreen.

Other practical features include the shrouded exterior mirrors, whose robust housings are made out of impact and scratch-resistant plastic.

The protective headlamp grilles are also new: they are made out of steel and effectively protect the lenses and lamps against damage.

And to top it all off (or should thatbe bottom) the fuel tank comes with a stout guard too... So all in all you've got just the machine for some mega-mud-pluging!
