There was Biglorryblog thinking that gas turbines were only ever used in protoype trucks, main battle tanks and the odd generator set... Welll thanks to Dave Webster and Pete Lynch I now know they were used in dump trucks too - which if it's a turbine-electric driveline makes real sense as the turbine can run at a steady speed where it's most fuel efficient. I believe it's a R210 (whatever that is) but would appreaciate some more bumf on maker. The shots is from the 70s. Meanwhile if anyone can provide me with any more gas turbine truck pictures (and I've already got the Leyland GT, the, 'Big Red' Ford and the General Motors one) then GO FOR IT! And click through here fore another classic dump truck that's doubling as a dray waggon...
Nice little model... But what's that in the back?
And what are these blokes all doing crowded around it?
Hang on..is that ice in the body and various bottles and cans of the old amber throat charmer...? As Pete says: "A smaller but very useful dumper truck from Dave, to my untrained eye it looks like Carlton Draft and Crownies in that load. Maybe a little overweight but the lads could fix that. Cheers Pete." And Dave says: "ONLY IN FNQ!"

Hi Brian
The R210 was a Euclid of 1971 which used an Avro-Lycoming gas turbine. However Euclid soon found out what Rover and others had already decided, that gas turbines were unsuitable for automotive use because they generate huge quantities of heat energy and must be built from very expensive titanium or similar metals. The R210 also proved to be much too noisy and thirsty to be practical.
This info came from Mike Woof's book "Ultra Haulers".
It's a Euclid. Built 1971 apparently. 1,850hp. Photo here (with captions in Chinese!):

Double tyres all round!.
The R210 was designed and built by Euclid in the 70's. Euclid is considered the brand that launched the first dump truck for construction and mining. In the 60's the company was bigger than Caterpillar.
Nowadays Euclid belongs to Hitachi and the lime green has been changed by the Japanese orange. Great trucks!. It's certainly difficult to find pictures of the R210. Thank you.

Euclid were taken over by General motors and in the '60's was the subject of a cl;ass action by Cat and Cummins the end result being GM had to divest themselves of Euclid, and immediately released a competitor in Terex. The 210 in the photo is at the crusher in Bougainville. The unit was 210 tonne payload and the dual tyres on the front were a necessity as no one buit a single bige enough for the load. This picture was taken shortly before the truck had a flame out coming down the crusher and had a bad accident however no one was hurt.
I have a lot of Euclid R210 shots but cannot work out how to attach them to the comments
