Trust 'The Brochure King' to come up with something appropriate on hearing the sad news concerning GM. "Hi Brian," he says, "In the light of GM filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, I thought it would be a good opportunity to pay tribute to happier times when the 'General' was a major force in heavy truck making. Staring off with this, a late model Astro 95 tractor unit. These were built in massive numbers and were also available badged as a Chevrolet Titan."

"Next is a Detroit Diesel-powered 'crackerbox' model from 1967. It looks like one of the 'Detroit Specials' with the multi-axle trailer." Now click through here for a really old-time 'Jimmy'...

TBK continues: "This ancient chassis from (I think) the early 1920s. The detail of the springs, chassis, radiator, and the fact it is a worm-driven machine give it the impression of being a really well-built and good quality truck. Cheers, Rich!"

Yes the GMC cabover wasn't a bad unit, particularly the jazzed up SS model as shown. I pulled one of Canada's early B-train tanker sets with one back in the mid/late 1970s, But it was never in the same league as say the Ford CL-9000. Oh, and pedant that I am, I must point out that the Crackerbox Jimmie is at the front end of a 'Great Lakes Special' or 'Michigan Train,' not a Detroit Special.
Oh those Crackerbox and Astro GMC's were great looking trucks!!
I learned how to drive a 'big rig' on an Astro. Miss that truck.
