BLB's let me loose on his blog... A pair of unusual heavy hitters from Rikki C.

I wil hopefully be adding pictures and questions that appear on our community forums in the hope that BLB's mighty army can shed some extra light on them...

To start with there is this unusual beastie heanorhht.jpg I must admit its a new one on me, the cab and doors have the look of the Volvo F88/89 series, the bonnet looks distinctly Scammell and the badging on the front is HHT apart from that I know nothing, all and any information gratefully recieved...

Now click through for a rather newer Heavy haulage tractor.

A rather smart looking Oshkosh in the colours of ALE with what looks to be 14 rows of modular trailer behind

The HHT Heanor vehicle was a Scammell Contractor with the cab replaced by a Volvo F88 one and a Detroit Diesel engine added. There were several built. One ended up with GCS Johnson .

As as far the HHT heavy haulage unit goe's I remember an article in one the the trade mags around the late 70's early 80's about Heanor Heavy Transport building their own prime mover that used the cab of an F series Vovlo, also think they made another one using a double legnth F series cab to give more crew accomodation.
Sorry I don't remember any more of the engineering details but as far as I remember the Volvo cab was seen as an ideal unit to build an heavy haulage rig around.

Good info guys, Did Heanor do the conversion/rebuilds in-house? and that 4th axle isnt anything I have seen before on a Scammell

If anyone one knows of a running example I would be interested in following up for a possible magazine peice

It's something like 25 years ago that I first featured Peter Searson's HHTs in the heavy haulage books 'Moving Mountains' and 'Mountain Movers'. As top man at Heanor Haulage, Peter couldn't get the tractors he really wanted so he built them himself. The chassis' were 6x4 Scammell Contractors but he liked Detroit engines and strange Fuller drive lines topped off with a Volvo F88 cab.
The image featured is HHT number 1, the only one he converted into an eight wheeler although it wasn't a huge success in this guise and he later removed the fourth axle.
HHT No. 2 was SAL 513 R - normally called Sal - and as Tim says, this passed to Geoff Johnson before Derek Parnaby used it for a while. Like all of Peter Searson's special builds, his collection has done the rounds of various other users once he decided to sell them on. No. 3 was BAL 600T and 4 XRA 790Y - although this had a Caterpillar engine. Strangely I was just talking to the new owner of 4 not too long ago and all being well it should come back onto the preservation scene.

Hello ,
there is a possibility that i may have a magazine
with all the details on this vehicle when i find it i will let you know.

All the best ,

Ron.

Scammell did make some eight wheel tractor units and only one entered service in the UK for Pickfords the rest were exports for New Zealand. The Pickfords one was based at Sheffield and was late being delivered in 1971 so it was double shifted for a lot of its early life on both national and international work. They were fitted with DD V8 @ 290bhp and a fuller 15 speed box which was simiular to what the HHTs had fitted.I did quite a bit of the double shift ing on it and it was a really good wagon for the time.

If you require any information on these I'll ask Peter for the answers. He's still the Chairman here at 74 but has reduced his working week to "only" 6 1/2 days. He takes off Sunday afternoon nowadays.

Best regards

Scott
