Orkney waggons! Nice R-reg FL6 on Hoy I spotted just up the road from the Scapa Flow naval museum at Lyness.
While this old 3 Series Scania was waiting to cross the water to the 'main island' and the ferry terminal at Houton when we arrived. Visit over we wait in the afternoon mist for the little Orkney Ferries island hopper to take me and Mrs Biglorryblog back to the main island via the oil terminal at Flotta. And with camera I hand I can hardly NOT record the unloading and loading of the ferry now can I? (Mind you, I have dodge around so Mrs BLB can't see what I'm doing!)
This shot shows the lady postie waiting to drop off a big parcel - the ferry's bow is raised and they're under starter's orders on the vehicle deck! And first away is the Scania!
Followed by the well-preserved LN2 Mercedes...
Up at the tail end ready to leave from the rear end is a single artic and click through here for a better look at it...
Loading up with another LN2 Merc from the 'Today's' fleet... You can see it's not a very big ferry - all the trucks pretty much sit in the centre line. The crosing to Hoy takes around 45 minutes on the day we went it was pretty misty unlike the rest of the week which was blazing hot with great blue skies.
Meanwhile up at the front (well stern actually) there was this artic destined for the oil terminal in Flotta a shot diversion on the way back to the main island... Naturally it's a Scania!
That's just enough room for the artic and tandem axle trailer, the box rigid...
And a panel van tucked in the back! And stay tuned because before the night is out I'll post up a couple of videos of the artic driving of at Flotta..and then reversing back on the ferry!

Brian
Calm down your too excited being home the stern is the arse end the bow is the front.
