OK clever clogs... What's one of these then? (And the clue is in the number plate... DOH! What a giveaway...) Now click through here for the full story (and some nice pictures of Biglorryblog's favourite off-roader too.)

Well as if you needed telling it was a picture of the brand new powerful rear power take-off system developed by Mercedes-Benz Unimog and fitted by specialists South Cave Tractors which now offers agricultural operators all sorts of new opportunities for fitting stuff to their Moggies. And what better way to celebrate another story on BLB's favourite go-anywhere machine than with a Moggie cutaway AND a cracking picture of an 'old and new' duo from ace-snapper Tom Cunningham.

Meanwhile, I can advise you that the rear PTO drive shaft provides 540/1000 speeds direct from the Mercedes-Benz diesel engine, which means that the Unimog will operate large balers, power harrows, wood chippers, and any PTO-driven equipment requiring up to 180hp. The modification has been developed in Germany at the Unimog plant and engineering supplier, Werner; and in the UK by South Cave Tractors. And Tony Levitt, boss South Cave Tractors, tells BLB: "The option - which is Mercedes-Benz Unimog approved and therefore covered under warranty - means we can interchange the output shaft of the PTO quickly and easily. The system will operate a multi-spline or more traditional, six-spline, outlet depending on the attachment - and this allows the operator to drive a much wider range of implements that require high horsepower." Finally Merc says: "The new rear PTO has been developed as a result of growing demand, both in the UK and throughout continental Europe. With the launch of the U300, U400 and U500 series some 8 years ago, Mercedes-Benz Unimog targeted the large and growing market for an all-terrain implement handler - the original concept behind the Unimog nearly 60 years ago." And here's the original Unimog from all those years ago...
