It's nice to know Biglorryblog isn't going completely senile...Ronald Pearce has kindly e-mailed me to say: "I could not agree more with your comments about the Iveco Strallis. When Christian Salvesen (who I drive for---now Norbert---purchased some of the big cab 430s and 480s it was with a faint heart that we gave up our DAFs. How wrong can you be? I've been driving this Iveco for over 4 years , it is double shifted , and it is still a joy to drive and live in..." Now click through here for more of Ron's comments and what he's driving now....
Like every truck, says Ron, the Stralis "Does have some minor faults and quirks but no more than the latest motor I have been given to replace the Iveco. The catwalk 'cat flap' top mounting is very fragile and prone to breaking , the side lights do not like 'after-market' cheaper bulbs and the stalks around the steering wheel have very cheap , stick-on pads which come unstuck very quickly. But apart from that it's a fine motor . It doesn't have the grunt of the physically larger engines that other manufacturers fit but I would swap back to it in a heart beat!" And he adds: "The trim is extremely hard wearing , the cabs have remained rattle free (apart from some of the driver's doors coming out of adjustment and letting in water and wind noise)---easily remedied by Iveco agents. After 4 years of operation, I , as a driver , cannot fault the product. We did have some of the small [Active Time-BLB] cab models on demo and they were cramped inside ..Go for the big [Active Space] cab !! It's almost a flat floor and has loads and loads of storage and very comfortable bunks . We have the single occupancy cabs with the drop down table and rear seats ...What luxury , and brilliant if you need to carry a few passengers as there are rear seat belts and back rests Personally , I prefer the early models with the auto change lever controls on the swivel pedestal at the driver's left hand and not the newer set up.
.
Ron finishes by sending me a shot of what I assume is his new motor. The Premium above."I have not learnt to love the Renault yet. We are still 'discovering' each other . ha ha." Great stuf Ron and thanks---keep us informed as to how you get along with the Frenchman.
