As the Duke of Wellington said: I don't know what they'll do to the enemy but by God they frighten me..." I thought it about time that Biglorryblog featured one of the wonderful waggons from Oshkosh, the specialist truck maker in the US so behold here's the TerraMax. I have no idea what it does except that it's described as an unmanned ground vehicle... And that it comes with all sorts of hi-tech cemera goodies on the front. So if you can tell me kkmore I'm all ears... Oh yes, can I have one too. Ideal for chasing next door's tomcat off the lawn..

What the TerraMax was supposed to do is win the 2007 DARPA Grand Challenge contest -- see http://www.darpa.mil/GRANDCHALLENGE/Teams/TeamOshkosh.asp. Basically, it was a demonstration and contest for autonomous vehicles in an urban driving environment -- including things like following traffic rules (at a four-way stop, no less!) and avoiding other cars.

See http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge/index.asp for a description of what actually happened. Although the TerraMax went awry early in the contest and apparently tried to enter a building, six of the eleven contestants successfully finished the course. (Including one from Virginia Tech, my alma mater.)
