Ron Johl has sent me these terrific shots and says: "Hello Brian, it's almost that time of the year for the fair at Dorset (2nd to the 6th of September) where admirers of steam and diesel will congregate in their masses to see these fine machines showing their prowess in the play-pen."

"So just to whet your appetites here from last year is John Attlee's Scammell Contractor kicking up the dust near the top of the pen with some 70-tons in tow. More to follow. All the best, Ron." And click through here for one more...

What a cracking photo Ron..." One of Watford's finest indeed!
And now a question for my beloved anorak army...as IO don't know the answer...in date order please what trucks followed the Antar in the British army as tank transporters...?

Brian,
The British Army has had few different tank transporters.
In the 1920s there was an AEC then in 1930s it was the Scammell Pioneer then Diamond T, then Thornycroft Antar in 1953, Scammell Crusader for lighter tanks, the Scammell Commander replaced the Antar and the Oshkosh replaced the Commander.
The Contractor never found favour in the British Army and the last Antar serving with 617 Tank Squadron RCT wasn't decommissioned until March 1987 amazingly.
Best wishes,
Roy
Aren't black & white shots more atmospheric than colour in certain situations. We've featured Lord Attlee's great Contractor before but these images are top drawer. And not a tilt in sight.
