"Hit the beach you guys!" hang on..this isn't an American truck so why is Biglorryblog sounding like Sgt John L. Stryker!? (And a pie for anyone who can tell me what film that comes from) Anyroadup I'm delghted to welcome Natasha Booker to the anorak army, not least as she and her partner Julian own a pair of Hippos..and that's Julian's up above storming the beach at Arromanches. Natasha says: "Hello, I joined your blog yesterday because I have a keen interest in lorries. I looked at your Leyland section and your military section to see if you had any Leyland Hippo's on there. But I saw none." Well not any more Natasha. And click through here for the full story plus more Hippo shots..
"Julian and I own two of these beauties," explains Natasha. "They are both World War II 10-ton Leyland Hippo GS 6x4 cargo lorries made for the British army to carry huge loads of cargo up to the front. Julian's lorry (above) is actually an original Normandy lorry because it went ashore at Arromanches on D-Day+2 (8th June 1944)."

"We haven't long bought my lorry (that's it above) and we dont know much of its history but we do think it never went to the front. Both lorries are marked up in Royal Army Service Corps markings. The pictures of Julain's lorry are from 2004 on the 60th anniversary of D-Day and the year's 65th anniversary of D-Day. The picture of my lorry is at an event to raise money for a memorial. I also would like to know of anyone else that has, or knows, of war-time Hippos I would appreciate any information please. Natasha Booker."
So anyone out there can lend some information? Post a comment or contact details for Natasha right now...and that's a order from BLB!

There are pictures of a number of wartime and post war military hippos in the Leyland collection on ccmv.fotopic.net (no www).

From "The Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949):
My name is Stryker, Sergeant John M. Stryker. You're gonna be my squad, a rifle squad.
Three of us have seen action: Corporal Dunn, Charlie Bass, and myself.
You're gonna learn from us.
In boot camp you learned out of a book. Out here, you gotta remember the book and learn a thousand things that have never been printed, probably never will be.
You gotta learn right and you gotta learn fast.
And any man that doesn't want to cooperate, I'll make him wish he hadn't been born.
Before I'm through with you, you're gonna move like one man and think like one man. If you don't, you'll be dead.
Now you guys have had a nice, easy day. I hope you enjoyed it because it's the last one you're gonna get for a long time.
You joined the Marines because you wanted to fight. Well you're gonna get your chance, and I'm here to see that you know how. If I can't teach you one way, I'll teach ya another.
But I'm gonna get the job done.
Any questions?
