That recently-married (and fellow blogger) young whipper-snapper Will Shiers has sent me this YouTube video link produced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the US This test was for IIHS's 50th year anniversary and involved a 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air being struck head on by a 2009 Chevvy Malibu. The object being? To see how much safer modern cars are in a collision ! The dummy in the Malibu suffered only minor leg injuries...

OK, first of all, I can't be ojective, because I LOVE vintage cars, at least I have to admit that.

I am not about to argue about the advantages of disc brakes, ABS, airbags and so on, but... I can't beleive that a 50 years old car structure is same rigid and intact as it was when it was new. Did you noticed the huge cloud of rust at the collision?

Also, I am not sure that the Bel Air even has engine. Can anyone confirm that?
