"Hi" says Dayle. "I wonder if you can identify this truck/lorry for me, you are welcome to put in on your blog, the photo was taken in South Africa this year at an annual Tractor and Engine show, the photographer is a friend of mine (Danie van den Berg) who sends me tons of pictures but unfortunately no description for this one. Thanks in advance, Dayle. Webmaster www.sa-transport.co.za " So Biglorryblog anorak army--put the man out of his misery!

This may be an Austin or BMC. With us they were called "aquarium" because of the fact that as a driver there wasn't much to hide when sitting behind the wheel !!

MT Andrzej Bakowski

Morris FG-Series it looks to me. Its Austin equvalent had a slightly diferent grille, with a horizontal bar in the lower section of the grille. They were also known as the ""Yhree-penny bit", due to the unusual angled door arrangement. ]

More on this and other Austin/Morris/BMC commercials (and indeed other commercials and cars) on this excellent Austin-Rover website:
http://www.aronline.co.uk

Go to FEATURE GALLERIES and then to "LIGHT TRUCKS" and then check "LIGHT COMMERCIALS" also

Cheers from Poland,

Andrzej

as andrez says it's an austin fg or three-penny bit,i always thought the nickname came from the cockney rhyming slang,as these were "a right three penny bit vehicle" lol!

Thanks Andrzej, very interesting site.

Cheers

Great website, Dayle and good to see you have Brian eating humble pie already. Are there any Atkinson trucks still getting around in South Africa?

Andrzj, thankyou for that excellent link.
I have to agree with you it is a Morris, not an Austin as the grills were different previous to the BMC merger.
As a school boy I spent my holidays, traveling the South Wales valley's with my father in one of many FG's he owned delivering fresh and frozen foods to corner stores.
They were noisey, but easy to work on, and cheap to run.

Cheers to you

Thanks Peter, I have never seen an Atkinson truck, but I do have one photo of one on my site, a Seddon Atkinson, photo taken in Zimbabwe, I ambitiously created a page for them but thus far, no one has sent me any pictures, except for Robert. http://www.sa-transport.co.za/trucks/seddon_atkinson.html
As soon as I get my grubby paws on that new camera my husband has been promising me I am going to be taking lots of photos of whatever trucks I can find, although these days its a bit dicey going into the industrial areas taking photos, they either think you are a cop, or want to 'relieve' you of said camera, either way you are liable for some verbal abuse or worse. My current camera has clocked over 4 times and is starting to feel its age, plus being dropped a couple of times has not helped :-)

Hi Peter, thanks for the comment re the site, I have never seen an Atkinson personally and have only one photo of one, taken in Zimbabwe, I ambitiously created a page for them, but apart from Robert no one has send me any pictures :-)
Click on my name and it should link to the page.

Cheers
Dayle
PS: As soon as I get my grubby paws on that new camera my hubby has promised me I will be out taking photos in force, although these days its a bit hazardous going into the industrial areas, where all the trucks are, they either think you are a cop, or want to 'relieve' you of said camera, either way you are in for either verbal abuse or worse.

My apologies for the double post above, the first one timed out so I re-did it. Gremilins love me
