I've been slowly catching up with my Biglorryblog googlemail and find I've got one from a certain young man down in New Zealand..yes it's the Old Vic' Hungerford himself who, 'Shock horror, uproar !' has given his beloved International a miss to drive somethign else..ahhh...but can you guess what it is? Click through here to find out...
Can you see what it is now? Vic tells me: "Just look what I was driving today [well three days ago and that will teach me to leave the Biglorryblog eyrie] There has been a few comments about this cab on BLB lately so what chassis is it on for The Old Vic to be driving it? I wonder if he took a quick trip over to South Africa to see if he could bludge a drive in a Tractomas?"
Vic continues: "No, it can't be that, as it has Fluidex signwriting. His boss must have bought a new Mack Qantum. No, that can't be right either as they don't make them anymore, maybe a secondhand one?"
"OK it's a genuine Renault, surely Vic won't be driving a Renault instead of his International?Nothing like that, it's just a mini-tanker we have for small deliveries around the city which any of us who happen to be around at the time drive. It's got a strange gearbox, Brian, I think they call it synchromesh or something, proper trucks don't have those, do they? It's quite weird, you have to use the clutch every time you change gear, what a funny idea. Anyway, I was only in the Renault for a few hours today, then it was back to my International which has a proper gearbox; have I mentioned that before, perhaps? Cheers, Vic" Well no mate you haven't mentioned it before (Oh, wait a minute maybe you have...perhaps 3,172 times before? But who's counting..this IS Biglorryblog after all)
Things are moving on Vic, there are even lorries out there now that change gears all by themselves, normally just before you reach the crest of a hill but I am sure the boffins are working on that..
That's amazing, isn't it Pete! Modern technology eh?
Actually I drove one of those things nearly 40 years ago, it was mounted in a butter box behind a big and thirsty V8 petrol engine. A bit girlie, I thought and it had a girlie name too. Alice or something?
