KW K923[1].jpg

Last one for tonight...and it involves a Kiwi voice from Biglorryblog's past "Hi Brian, Peter Geany here---we met many moons ago when I worked for Cummins with Roger Wilsden and Paul Foulston. I drove the ERF in the Commercial Motor 17-tonner group test in about 1991 I think." Ahh yes I remember it well says BLB., but I have interrupted Peter who continues. "Anyway seeing that shiny new KW K108 on Biglorryblog prompted me to scan a photo of the very first KW cab-over in New Zealand operated by my Father J.V.Geany Ltd.  It was a 1965 Canadian Kenworth K923 with NHC250 Cummins Spicier 4x4 transmission and Timken (Rockwell) SQHD rear axles.  3 decks of sheep and one of Cattle.  She usually pulled a 28 foot 3 axle trailer and was supposed to gross 38 tons. Loaded with Cattle I reckon she was closer to 42 tons.  We used to manufacture our own stock crates, and definitely no effluent tanks in our days!"

Merc 1418-2[1].jpg

"And here are some of our Merc's thrown in for good measure, a 1418 of which we had 10 and a 2223 of which we had 2." And click through here for the 2223 and how they ran....

Merc 2223[1].jpg

Peter adds: "In contrast to the 1418s excellent service, the 2223's gave no end of trouble with first the engines but mainly with the ZF transmissions.  But I guess you have heard that story over and over with only Fuller Roadranger transmissions able to give good service. [Errr yea Peter so please don't start Vic off again!] Anyway I have some other treats with some old KW's and Pacifics." I look forward to them Peter!

Great pics - that Kenworth is a stunner! Is it still on the road here in New Zealand?? I'm lookin forward to more pics also!!!

HiBrian,
It was good to see a photo that K W of Geanys .Back in the early 70s I had the occasion to use the workshop of J V Geany Ltd to repair an over drive Foden epicycle 12 speed gear box that the company that I worked for had at that time and I recall that KW was in the workshop in what I would have said "A sad state of repair"
As the years have sliped by I have wondered If that K W ever made it back on to the road again, may be Peter can tell us.
PVH.
