Bert De Vuyst has sent this interesting shot to me which either shows a 4x2 Scania hauling three trailers in Holland..or else it's three artics driving VERY Close together! He tells me it comes from the website of Biglorryblog's favourite 'Cloggie' Iep van der Meer and you really should check out Iep's website as it has some fabulous stuff on it http://iepvandermeer.nl/ Meanwhile, maybe Iep can tell me what's going on here...?
I knew that the Dutch had conducted trials with two trailers long before the current LHVs, but three? And methinks that there may have been a few traction problems with a 4x2 unless the three trailers were always empty of course. Anyway, more information PLEASE!
As far as I know, this is a picture of a 'questionable' trial performed by fa Rynart about 20 years ago. Since these haulier had a regular transportline into Russia, he tried to take more than one semi trailer in a combination. That is to say, from the Poland-Russian border on, which is about halfway to Moscow. Therefore he had mounted a trailer coupling in the rear of each semi trailer. It was his intention (and was allowed) to drive with not more than two trailers.
The combination on the picture was driven on a sunday morning on the motorway from his home adress to a spaghetti junction north of Rotterdam, a distance of about 30 km. Fa Rynart wanted to judge the behaviour of the truck wit a big mass to tow. So this was just a folly.
Referring to the Dutch trials with LHV's, even a combination with two of these trailers is not even allowed because of its length overall. The max allowed length is 25,25m the same as in Sweden and Finland. The length of the load aera must be at least 18,00 m and not more than 21,42m. This as is result of the dimensions, laid down in European directives (96/3/EC and 97/27/EC) and the need to avoid the introduction of American styled trucks without any contribution to the load/transport efficiency.
