It was a fine succesor to XTM546X Invincible the big Econofreight S24. Only thing is I've only seen it refered to as a C series and not an S24. Also seem to remember that they only ever made 3 C series trucks in total.
Unipowers were great trucks and to this day I will never understand how the MoD could have not chosen them (Alvis) for UK's tank transporter contract, along with the fuel tankers as well. That loss of contract did them in along with much British truck history. Oshkosh is a superb truck but after all the Unipower was a BRITISH truck and company. Yes, the Oshkosh truck is built in the UK but still an odd choice to me and I never saw much comment on the whole thing. Perhaps some one on here can shed some light on this.
Mark I don't know why the MOD purchased Oshkosh over Unipower. I believe there may have been a drive off and rumour has it that the Unipower performed well against the Oshkosh. However, in the end it was probably all down to politics.
In answer to Mark's comments I think the simple answer is probably politics and all that is implied by that. Probably best not to imply anything more by this!
Adam - you are right. This isn't an S24 but one of the rare C Series Unipowers. And a great motor it is. I also echo Marks thoughts having driven the Alvis Unipower prototype for the army tank transporter contract. Some times the movers and shakers in the UK are crazy. And just why have we sold Cadbury?
