Remember this? The Foden Twin-Load. Does such a beast still exist today? Meanwhile, John 'Kite Marque' Ormandy has very kindly responded to a nudge from Biglorryblog for some classic Foden ephemara and he's replied by sending me this memory from 1965...Foden's very own wagon and drag...offering 2 x 16ft 2in load platforms. I seem to recall another Foden fan raving about how this was one of the most important trucks of the 20th Century Now click through here for more....

loPickfords 001.jpg
How about this for a slice of transport history? A post card from the early 20th century depicting a Pickfords 'steam road van' from 1770.' (Look closely and you can see Vic Hungerford at the wheel using the very first Fuller 18-speed!) Actually I'm not sure there WERE steam road vans in 1770 but what do I know? Anyroadup as ever I have Roy Larkin www.historicroadways.co.uk to thank for this wonderful piece of haulage ephemara...  and he says: "Brian,  wouldn't you just love to receive an acknowledgment of an enquiry like this? The date line on the back fo the card of 190.. kind of gives away its age and on the rest of the card states ' Messrs. PICKFORDS beg to acknowledge your favor of .......................... respecting ....................... to which immediate attention shall be given."

loPickfords 002.jpg
"Incidentally," says Roy. "note the 'American' spelling of favour! I've noticed that tyres were called tires up to the early 1920s as well. Best wishes, Roy." Well you know what they say about the Americans and the English..two nationas devided by the same language. But look at the post card manufacturer! 'Tuck's Post Card' Was this an early sideline of Bob Tuck I wonder...? Or was he related to the actual card manufacturer---Raphael Tuck & Sons, 'Art publishers to their majesties The King and Queen." We deserve to be told Bob!

Carl2.jpg

There I was, quietly snoozing away when I was rudely awakened by our brave leader 'Young Mr Salter' who asks me: "Pay attention! Any chance of a regular weekly post looking at the best products for sale in RT.com/buy & sell...sort of a Biglorryblog 'Pick of the Classified'? You can choose what you like." Well, like a boy let loose in a sweet shop I promptly checked out http://www.roadtransport.com/buyandsell/default.aspx

carl4.JPG

And guess what I found? Some rather smart ERFs for sale. But not just any ERFs oh no. These are ECTs with, yes, Cummins engines! The retailers of such fine road-going provender are the good folk at EVS (UK) who have a few to choose from far as I can see looking at their rt.com http://www.roadtransport.com/buyandsell/sellers/evs_uk_ltd-1621.htm pages

Carl5.jpg

They're based at Belton, Doncaster, and Anthony and Carl on 01427 875306 are the men to talk to. And I'm grateful to Carl for sending me these shots too. Cummins-powered ECTs? Got to be some interest in those--and I don't just mean from the BLB anorak army! But for a rather more unusual bit of kit from EVS click through here....

Austin line up 1963.jpg

Welll now we know where this Chinese truck operator got his inspiration from...though Biglorryblog does think he's taken the idea just a little too far.....nine into one doesn't go

lochinaboy2.jpg

And for a pie name the vehicles in the top phto and the year (for a pie naturally). And click through here for an awesome Aussie Scammell....

gazleg2.jpg

From the sublime to the ridiculous! Gary 'Two Hat's Richards (BLB's man at Mack and Volvo down-under) has clearly been in the wars as he tells me he's suffering from a major puncture...."Hi Brian, one of the few upsides of having a broken 'drive axle' (leg) is that you get time at home to do some research (fiddle around!!). When I was wandering through the photo section of the State library of West Australia, I can across a couple of great pics of G88s. I thought they follow on from the recent blogs on the Kiwi '88s'. What could be more Aussie than the G88 brewery truck posed with that other famous form of transport - the Mini Moke. Check out the bullbar of the Volvo - with that forward rake, looks like you could clear forests with it !!! It could have been quite possible that the Moke and G88 could have come from the same assembly plant here in Brisbane - Volvo acquired the Leyland plant in 1972. I would guess that this pic is around the same vintage!" Now click through here for more....

supreiv2.jpg

OK so Mark Knopfler's latest album has a song about an Albion reiver. Well I'll see you and raise you as SUPER Reiver says Bigloryblog. And to prove it here's a ad from Commercial Motor from nineteen umptyforth (guess the real year for a pie). Of course in those days if you had a truck to sell it had to be called a "SUPER xxxx" Don't believe me?

2comsup.jpg

Well here's the SUPER Commet from Leyland! And if you need any help with the year of the Albion the ad featured, and I quote, the following line, "..a triple braking system that fully meets the resvied regulations for 1968..." Now click through here for a coloured Comet.

Is it Biglorryblog or has anyone else noticed the remarkable (if not uncanny) similarity between a Scammell Townsman and the Cadbury's Smash Martians? Was someone in Watford's design office doing a bit of 'moonlighting'? I think we should be told!

smash.jpg

A pair of Scammell Townsmans...

Ring any bells? The brand new Seddon 32:four:220 with Rolls Eagle, David Brown six=speed box, plated for 32-tons but designed ready for 38! So what was the year this 'Friendly Giant' first appeared at the Scottish Motor Show (now there's a giveaway...) Now click through for more

soldads4.jpg

How's this for a bit of advertising chutzpah? Back in may 1966 the then 'motiring correspondent of the Daily Express, Basil Cardew declared: "The Scammell Contractor is a goods express which brings a new era to commercial motoring; yet it's as easy to handle as a oprivate car." To which all Biglorryblog can say is he must have spent many years driving some pretty rough old cars!

soldads3.jpg

Here's one that John Henderson, Biglorryblog's man 'North 'o' the Border' should get with his eyes closed! So what was the year...and where was it taken John? And whatever happened to York trailers?!

91612872_full.jpg

Now here's a smart horsebox---'97 Scania P-cab with 400 'horses' under the hood, and more goodies in the accomodation area than you can shake a stick at, What's more the alloy 'horsebox' bodywork that can be demounted too...and the downside. It's great if you happen to live in  ew Zealand as it's for sale on the corking Kiwi website Trade Me and you can see it all on this link http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Trucks/Horse-trucks/auction-233803209.htm (Naturally I was tipped off on this sublime equine carrier by Rod Simmonds).

Trade Me has all sorts of other stuff too well worth looking at.

Scammell Bus.jpg

"The name's driver... Bus driver!" Yes 'The Brochure King' is back on Biglorryblog after a far-too-long absence. Rich Stanier says: "Hi Brian, I haven't had the chance to see much of the Blog as of late, but caught up yesterday and some things particularly caught my attention. The RFW off road bus brought to mind this impressive heavy duty bus above built by, of all companies, Scammell. I don't really know much about this vehicle but it looks like it is in South Africa, or possibly Australia, so I wonder if any of your Scammell experts can tell us more?"

Scammel Crusader.jpg

Rich goes on to say: "Whilst locating the Scammell photo I came across this other shot of a Crusader, brand new at Watford. One of my all time favoutite lorries, and surely worth a blogging?"

Robson Drive.jpg

"And here's a scan of a Robson Drive brochure, which shows the method by which the device transfers torque from the drive axle to a trailing axle, as seen on the 'air powered' Scania." Now click through here for more expert advice on how to take a nice truck phto... From 1909!

Last one for tonight blog fans...and once again it's all down to Don at the wonderful Adclassix site who has graciously allowed me to feature the odd image or two from the world's best retro site for old and new truck, van, pickup  and 4x4 and also car ads----and don't take my word for it go and see for yourself using this handy BLB webblink www.adclassix.com/truckindex.htm

51dodgetrucks.jpg

Anyroadup here are a few more from the adclassix collection. Frankly I can't get enough of them and you can buy the original ads from the site as well...And I didn't even kn ow Studebaker made pick-up trucks either...did you? And how about 'job-rated Dodge Trucks? now click through here for one more..

Hino_one[1].jpg

In case you haven't heard there's a minor cricket competition going on over here (it's not very important but the Aussies seem to get wound up about it...) I have AtkiPete Lynch to thanks for this. Only before you get too smug try clicking through here!

funnyerf3.jpg

Before Biglorryblog departed Reed Towers I naturally went through all those little nooks and crannies whereupon I found a whole shed-load of back numbers of Commercial Motor from 2000. Flicking through them I stumbled upon these somewhat surreal ads for ERF's 'Part Attack'...I can't see anyone but the Brits doing it somehow (except perhaps the Aussies..and we all know what they're like...)

Funnnyerf1.jpg

Now click through here for two more from the same a campaign....

Coach Wrap.jpg

Biglorryblog has David B Traver Adolphus, esteemed associate editor on the excellent US Hemmings Motor News www.hemmings.com for this contribution. "Howdy," says dave. " I can't remember if I might have sent this along once before. Ignore if that's the case. But I like those Actrosses. Actri. Actrossen. I have a 1/43 version for my son. Michael Browning there is good about answering questions, if you have any. American auction biggies Barrett -Jackson are doing something similar with a motor coach as een here - I'm not sure if that's your bailiwick. Big up yourself, Dave." Thanks mate, and as for it being my bailiwick - if it's weird, it goes in BLB!

79chevroletelcamino_royalkn.jpg

Encouraged by the kind remarks from Don at the wonderful Adclassix site (who has very kindly allowed me to feature the odd image or two from the world's best retro site for old and new truck, van, pickup  and 4x4 and also car) ads---and dont' take my word for it go and see for yourself using this handy BLB webblink www.adclassix.com/truckindex.htm here are a few more from the adclassix collection. Frankly I can't get enough of them and I suspect Biglorryblog readers like them too! And you can buy the original ads from the site as well...If only I could have bought an original 79 El Camino Chevy pickup though...

51studebakerpickup.jpg

It's clearly a world apart from the Studebaker pick-up seen here in this advert I'd say. And for a pie does anyone have an idea what year it comes from...? And when did Studebaker end making cars?

55reoengines.jpg

Getting a bit heavier now....here's one for REO 'Comet' engines from 1955...now click through here for great news if you're an old American car freak...

55internationaltrucks.jpg

Here's one for 'Mr Inter' Vic Hungerford (although I suspect here's currently over here rather than in New Zealand). Biglorryblog plays host to him and his missus Val next week and I'm looking forward to meeting them both. The ad is from the mid-50s is from fabulous www.adclassix.com/truckindex.htm website which I frankly can't get enough of - and I trust they won't mind me using one of their images in return for a shameless plug. Frankly I think it's one of the best 'retro' sites around where you can buy old ads for cars, trucks, you name it they've got it. It's great for just browsing too.

61ihtrucks1.jpg

How narrow do you like your cab? I set up this blog before I departed for holiday (well I know you'd be missing Biglorryblog). This ad is from the fantastic www.adclassix.com website where there are superb old car, truck etc ads for sale and where you'll find some great images of US trucks and pickups from days gone by. Well worth a visit and I trust they won't mind me showing you this one from 1961 which features an IH cabover with a 54" bumper-to-back-of-cab measurement I'll say that again just 54 INCHES! The ad was in conjunction with the American Trucking Association (ATA - the US equivalent of the RHA/FTA) and talked about trucking efficiency provided by a cabover like this...
