Yes, you've guessed it. It's another unlikely tale from the 'Dark Continent' from Bigloryblog's very own 'Good man in Africa' Jerry Burley---who's just taken the hammer to is piggy bank. "BLB, I muttered to you the other day that we were getting tired of what are, unfortunately by design, "fragile" UK trucks falling to bits on our roads here. We have struggled on with the resin cabbed Fodens as long-haul trucks but when they break (which they do regularly on our not quite billiard-smooth bush supply routes) there is just no way of repairing them satisfactorily and a never ending cycle of ugly, bodged repair, downtime and angry client ensues".But first, says JB,  the tradtional nature notes: This picture shows the result of a recent Frankenstein-esque experiment where an entire third world village has been biologically crossed with a Buick. Result: an eco-taxi that also addresses unemployment whilst reducing on emissions,While it could get a bit high under there on a hot day it's pretty cheap to run---and no shortage of spares for the undercarriage!"

"Meanwhile, it's back to creaky Fodens, " says JB, "and where we are going (or trying to go anyway) next. A 10 year old,worn-smooth ex-UK double diff Foden 4400 (as an example rather than being specifically picked upon, as I am very fond of our Foden trucks) will cost UK£8k of anyone's moolah, and more if you want one that has half a chance of making it to UK port under its own motive power."

"Then you have to get it here so double that. Admittedly, three months of hire and its paid for, ...with residuals still to be taken into account. Enter the ultra-basic, Chinese copy of the Powerliner, complete with Chinese-built engine. Repairs can be done with a 3/8 Whitworth spanner and an oil can. New, on the road price here (and thats 1500kms from the coast and a long, long way from China too!) USD68k."

Graeme at www.gbtruckpix.com has very kindly sent me this shot of a Steyr (following on the last blog posting) and says: "Hi Brian, I seen you piece on Big Lorry Blog today about the Steyr, very rare piece of kit, though I'd send you on this on that was ran by Angus Cochrane from Northern Ireland." In the meantime do check out Graeme's website some cool pictures on it.

Now click through here to find out how the Steyr cab lives on...in China.

Here's one from Biglorryblog's favourite Crazshee Dutch Guy Tim de Jong (he's a crazshee motorcyling cloggie dat's for shure!). Any way he's sent me these pictures of a Chinese Foton----not to be confused with a futon, which is some kind of Japanese torture bed contraption (or the Zutons, a 'popular beat combo' M'lud...) Anyway he says: "On the way back from my holiday, I stopped at the Technik Museum in Speyer, Germany. There I spotted, tucked underneath a huge Antonov freighter plane, this Foton Auman truck, donated with broad smiles to the museum by The Peoples Republic of China."

chinee3.JPG

Tim goes on to say: "Maybe the Chinese intended to 'worry' the German truck makers. Intetrestingly, Mercedes' Wörth truck plant is not far away from the museum---which must for all BLB anoraks planning to visit Germany!"

However, on clser inspection Tim concludes: "Frankly, there's no need to worry. If you look closer at the Foton, you spot the in-line fuel pump, a typical 20th century truck part. Same goes for the rear axle suspension, which is a package of leaf springs. The ten-litre engine churns out 300 hp, with no Euro norm quoted anywhere. [Actually I think it's an iSM Cummins-BLB] Check the pic of the side of the cab. Gaps like that remind me of Lada's from the seventies!"

Now click through for more and see if I'm right about that engine...!

That energentic young gad-about, abandoned car enthusiast and technical editor of Motor Transport Will Shiers has been on his travels again and has sent Biglorryblog this story and message: "Hi Brian, I found this at the Iveco Stralis factory in Ulm, Germany yesterday and thought you might be interested."

Will3Chinese%203.jpg

"It's a Chongqing Hongyan 26-tonner, although I'm told it's good for 40-tonnes at night when nobody's looking! It's an Iveco joint venture. I wonder how many plastic trees were felled to make that interior?" I don't know Will but it's got a slap-across, 'double H' ZF Ecosplit box so I won't hear a word against it says BLB, adding are you sure it's not Hongyan Chongqing?

Anyway click through here for more on this 'Chinese..err... six....!

Biglorryblog's man in Belgium Bert De Vuyst has sent me these pictures and links together with the following message (and indeed challenge to BLB readers): "Hello Brian. Here's another picture for the anorak brigade---but what is it? (no, it's NOT a Merc).

Well it ceratinly LOOKS like a Merc Bert but clicking on this link may provide a clue to BLB readers. Yes it's another one of those Chinese truck makers, this time the Baotou Beifang Benchi Heavy-Duty Truck Company Ltd. which, according to its website "....is one of the famous domestic top-class heavy-duty truck manufacturing companies in China." And by the looks of it they have some kind of agreement going with DaimlerChrysler whereby they (BBBHDTCL) build their own trucks with a variety of different engines but with a version of the old SK 'Powerliner' cab range.

Bert has also sent me these links so you can check out the trucks' various spec sheets and he says: "Look at the engines! Have fun, Bert."

And just for good measure he's sent me these two shots of Chinese 'Merc' trucks from the following website.

Meanwhile, to see a really 'classic' Mercedes truck click through here...
