Horsefloat2[1].JPG

'The Old Vic' Hungerford is back on Biglorryblog and has picked up on the subject of horseboxes...or as they call them in New Zealand 'Horse Floats'."Hi Brian," he says, "I liked Rod's photo of that horse float, but not all horse floats in NZ are quite like that. I was in the far north a couple of days ago, where most things are done a bit differently; I believe that is the case in Australia too." Now click through here for more....

Gary 'Two Hat's Richards (the man who looks after product promotion and management for Volvo and Mack down-under) has sent me this cover shot from Bulldog Bulletin, a fine publication from 1972..."Hi Brian, seeing the Kiwi Ford D Series still hard at work prompted me to scan this 1972 article from our Mack PR publication."

newgary02kiwi.JPG

"The headboards on the livestock crates are real gems," says Gary who adds: "...and some interesting sheep hauling stats!! Rod Simmonds might be able to add to the Reeves story...Incidentally, our NZ Mack dealer has a restored F model - one of the first in the country so it may well be this truck. Murray - can you add any details on this customer or truck? Regards Gary..." Now click through here for more...

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JULY 09 WINTER 004.jpg

"Feeling a bit sheepish?" wonders Biglorryblog's Krafty Kiwi Rod Simmonds, who's been away for far too long! Indeed I believe those sheep are saying: "Isn't that bloke the famous truck photographer from New Zealand...?"

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JULY 09 WINTER 006.jpg

Anyroadup Rodders says: "I've finally got round to downloading some pics of recent travels. Attached a selection from Fielding Sheep sale. Nice variety!"

And here's three from the same stable... Now click through here for more!

Last one for today...spotted by Biglorryblog on the M6 this morning near Brum on this livestock trailer...

Mutton1.JPG

Nick Zea-Smith has sent me this--the very latest in Kiwi sheep-shifters..."Hi Brian, after seeing Australia's attempt at transporting beef in the outback, here is a much more impressive way of moving livestock - the New Zealand way! Over the last few weeks there have been a number of BLB postings from Cam, Vic and various other correspondents in the Southern Hemisphere on Utes and livestock hauliers in former British outposts. This is one ewe-te with a difference that lives somewhere near Christchurch, New Zealand. The pictures were sent to me by Dave Matthews, not of the music band fame, but a good Kiwi 'mate' who lives in Christchurch, NZ (and is an ardent Charlton Athletic fan BTW)." Evening/Morning, says Rod Simmonds who's obviously suffereing from the heat and is a little confused. Air Con is on to cool things down....just in case you were interested! Have this rather tidy new DAF horse float!"

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09 106.jpg

And from the rear with a nice little sign off too....

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09 107.jpg

Cheers Rod, take a cold shower if you're too hot!

phip093.JPG

Obviously Aussie roadtrains and Canadian B-Trains are the falvour of the week and the 'Keeper of the Flame' Martin Phiuppard has weighed in on both counts including this rather ncie selection." Hi Brian, sorry about the poor quality of the attached. A combination of my abysmal photographic ability and rapidly failing light I'm afraid." Well I know how quickly the light goes in Oz Martin, especially in the winter...it caught me out on more than one occasion.

phipo92.JPG

And you can see what Martin means..the gloaming comes on very fast but fortunately not so fast as we can't see this super four-trailer Kenworth livestock roadtrain...

phip091.JPG

Marti contues: "Anyway we caught up with this four-trailer livestock outfit in Australia last year, way off in the bush of course. So, Atki Pete, all I can say is "Call those three-trailer combinations a road train mate? Nah! This is a road train." Touche...now click through here for another 'star'
Big Rig 01 (Large).jpg
It's obviously one of those typical Aussie vs Kiwi ' Call that a stock truck mate? NAH.....THIS is a stock truck!' sort of day on Biglorryblog as AtkiPete Lynch says: "G'day Brian, with questions hanging over some of Rod's Kiwi road train photos here are some real beauties from Peter Murray of Townsville." And what an absoultely stonking shot too! I'd have been pleased to have come back with that one...
KW schmidts.jpg
" Your big Kenworth road train for the larger jobs..." says Pete. But hold on...where's the little compartment for the Blue Heeler stock dog?
western star stock truck.jpg
Ah yes a real 'Star' performer...."This Western Star 26metre B-Double is for the 'smaller' flock." adds Pete.
Inter-003.JPG
Even this old ex-Army 6x6 Inter is getting in on the action. "This one has had a turbo Perkins transplant but would not be any candidate for a speeding ticket!" notes Pete...
Inter-003A.JPG
But with that camouflage colour scheme you shouldn't have much trouble sneaking up on the sheep Pete! They'll just think it''s a very long hedge!!!

Meanwhile, click through here for the kind of Biglorryblog 'What the fizzing heck is that?' picture that sends all my beloved anorak army into a frenzy of pie-claiming ecstasy!

Yes Martin Hayes it IS more livestock trucks on Biglorryblog ...but the good news is there's a Daf in there somewhere so don't complain---otherwise I'll post up some Foden pictures and then you'll well and truly get it in the neck!

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09-TeKuitiMasterton 118.jpg

Varrooomm...how's this for kicking up a little dust with a K104? That Rod Simmonds he loves rubbing it in...here are we poms suffering from icey weather and Arctic winds and he says: "Sweltering in another 35C day...Stock trucks are busy this time of year, dropped in at TeKuiti Ewe fair, Shearing Capital of NZ (and the world they say) famous for hard All Blacks like Colin 'PineTree' Meads."

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09-TeKuitiMasterton 120.jpg

"A wide variety of trucks, some 10,000 ewes were for auction, second day or two day fair. Most units can take 400 ewes depending on weight.." Ah yes but how many All-Blacks can they carry eh?"

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09-TeKuitiMasterton 107.jpg

I like this picture..rather like the showdown see in a 'Fistful of dollars!" Cue music and long lingering stares while drivers chomp on cigars....sorry just drifted off there, anyway Rod continues: "Got some others from David Pope fleet, boys knew i was coming so took all the wheels off truck and trailers, polished in the heat...worth it. Got another assignment tomorrow, this will rock your socks off mate!!! Kind Regards Rod."

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09-TeKuitiMasterton 091.jpg

Nice looking Scania...and the PTL rigs have rather nice individual markings too

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09-TeKuitiMasterton 086.jpg

I originally thought Pio Pio was the local name for the fish which is either a) a Sailfish or b) a blue Marlin c) a Swordfish so I guess Pio Pio is the local name for it....and it's obviously not a Halibut (you have that with chips as Ollie Dixon knows)....

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09-TeKuitiMasterton 087.jpg

But it's obviously a place in NZ....errr DUH Bgloryblog don't you know anything? Well I know this is Monarch of the Glen and if you're all so clever, for a pie, who painted that famous picture?

TRUCK PHOTOS NZ JAN09-TeKuitiMasterton 104.jpg

OK Martin you can move to the next blog now!" And click through here for a quick way to get 'smoked' lamb...

Sheepy 1.jpg

Rod Simmonds in New Zealand has clearly been feeling a bit sheepish. He's just sent me this selection of Kiwi carriers and says: "Once a year the Ongarue district have a big sheep sale (ewes and lambs combined this year) mid January."

Sheepy sheep.jpg

Rod continues: "Ongarue is deep in The King Country, livestock and forestry area-see if you can find on Google. The old town has no shops or services, long gone, but local school uses the sale day for fundraising by catering lunches and drinks. It was 30-35 degrees C so need plenty of refreshments!" Fortunately Rodders still managed to battle heat-stroke (and the refreshments) to send this great selection of classic Kiwi waggon and drag livestock carriers starting with this neat Isuzu...

Sheepy 2.jpg

"Yards hold around 15,000 head nowadays and a good day was had by all!" says Rod....not least his son Benji who features shortly. But first its British truck time.

Sheep y3.jpg

Like this excellent late-model Foden 4000 Series...kite marque rules...

Sheepy 4.jpg

"Swede Thunder" it says on the front. Scania gets in on the act. Meanwhile, Rod goes on to comment that while everyone had a good time..."Except maybe all the many truck drivers who started well before sun up to get to all the back country farms to collect then spend rest of day after auction delivering to all parts of the North Island! Naturally Ongarue Transport used every unit they had to service their many clients."

Sheepy 5.jpg

Well this Inter cabover looks pristine Rod--either hasn't done much work or driver is a stickler for cleanliness! Rod closes: "Maybe something you could use in T&D, can send full size if you want?" How about it Will?

Sheepy 6.jpg

Another Inter waggon and drag--this one's called 'Inter-Mischief II'...geddit?

Sheepy benji.jpg

Well Benjamin clearly had a good time Rod---and why not spending time with truck-mad Dad?! And for a pie what's he looking at (the truck that is)

Sheepy 7.jpg

Aforementioned Inter identifier..!

Sheepy 8.jpg

Isuzu has rather interesting looking bodywork--porthole ventilation rather than conventional slats/flaps...

Sheepy benji1.jpg

Your boy has either got a sensible sun hat Rod--or he fancies joining the Foreign Legion! As for the sheep they look 'baaaard' stiff....

Sheepy 9.jpg

About time we had an Argosy in this story Rodders...and click through here for more Kiwi sheep shifters!

anihino1.jpg
Rod Simmonds in New Zealand has sent me this rather splendid shot of a new Hino eight-legger for for Garrity Brothers, Greytown. And quite  a looker it is too, what with its livestock body and four-axle dangler on the back Rod tells Biglorryblog: "Hino NZ have upgraded the complete Hino heavy truck line up and are now offering a range of lightweight Dana/Meritor axles and suspension options too.  Garritys have just commissioned another new Hino for dedicated livestock work throughout NZ, an addition to the existing 7 all Hino heavy truck fleet with a couple of 'projects' in the sheds including Dodges, Commers, and Chevs." And here's one of those special projects that Rod alludes too... Perkins power rules! But is it me or is this one of the ugliest cabs around?
anihino3.jpg
Meanwhile, Rod continues: " This Hino 700-2913 is rated at 450hp and runs through an 18 speed roadranger. New engine options are due later in 08. Garritys have been in transport for over 100 years, and have been on the Bobby Calf collection run for much of the time (new season veal) the picture shows them trans-shipping from one truck to another...
anihino4.jpg
"This entails picking up during late Winter period  from dairy farms throughout the Wairarapa region, and transporting them to abattoir some three hours away. Many trucks are used for collections and are consolidated for the larger trucks to take. Great care is taken for the welfare of the calves and Garritys (or G Boys as they are known) are experts at this."Now click through here for more and a nice cartoon too.

Rushour1.jpg

Back by popular demand "Rush Hour" at Tuakau Ewe Fair in New Zealand where you'll find all sorts are splendid waggon and drag livestock carriers...take a look at this pastoral scene and you might just spot the 'Best of British' peeking around the corner...

Now click through here to see a couple of tough sheep shifters!
