On March 27 last year, two drivers were killed when Jonnie Reynolds' Volvo lorry ploughed into the tail of four cars behind a Renault truck, between the Histon and the Girton interchanges on the A14.

HGV driver Reynolds aged 49, admitted he left just a 30ft gap between his lorry and the car in front, so when the lorry at the head of the four vehicles carried out an emergency stop, Reynolds' 36t lorry pushed into the cars in front.

Reynolds from Caldecote, Cambridgeshire was found guilty of two charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

Today he was handed a three-year prison sentence and four-year driving ban.

Sympathy of course goes out to the family of the deceased, but its probable Reynolds himself will be in a bad place himself; having to deal with the horror of what he has been found guilty of causing.

There have been other tragic stories over the past 12 months including a trucker who transported an unsecure load, causing the death of a motorist. He was fined £500.

In your opinion is this a case of dramatically bad driving? Of being careless? Or in fact a tragic mistake that many lorry drivers could find themselves making? Any thoughts I want to hear...

This time armed robbers disguised as police officers set up a bogus checkpoint in Stanwell Road, Feltham and hijacked a silver Transit van carrying £400,000 of computer equipment. One of the four offenders was believed to be carrying a Taser gun.

At 11.18pm on Monday 9 November the van driver was flagged down by the robbers; two were wearing traffic officer caps and hi-vis jackets. They sprayed the driver and passenger with CS gas and forced them out of the vehicle. The hijackers drove the cargo to Stanwell Moor, Staines and unloaded the kit to their own vehicle before ditching the van.

"This was a well-organised and targeted attack aimed at a specific vehicle that the robbers knew would be carrying a high value consignment," says detective sergeant Ian Wilson of the Met Police.

Friday 13 certainly proved a nightmare for one truck driver who was bundled into a van by VOSA impersonators involved in hijacking his trailer and a £300,000 copper load.

The HGV driver was transporting the copper load to several automotive firms in South Wales and stopped in a lay-by off the A40 in Ross-on-Wye at approximately 5.10pm. He was approached by two men from a white Transit van which stopped in the area behind him which is used as a VOSA inspection site.

A replica of red trailer stolen by thieves.

Without warning, the two men bundled the driver into the van and drove off. He was driven to a remote spot near Hambridge in Worcestershire and left at the side of the road. He was found unharmed by police just after 7.30pm.

Witnesses are being sought by West Mercia Police, and anyone with any information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 0800555111.

This sounds like a truly traumatic ordeal, and prompts concerns over whether it is safe to stop your truck for anyone. This is not the first time bogus VOSA officers have come to light. In March a driver from Birmingham-based JM Transport was pulled over in Preston, by thieves posing as VOSA inspectors. He was threatened with a Taser gun.

However its disgusting to see how some can take advantage of such serious cases to benefit their own greed. I refer to 47-year old trucker Brian Fogg who was last week jailed for five and a half years for faking a £1m hijack. He claimed that four people impersonating VOSA officers had threatened him at knifepoint on the M53 in Cheshire.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) warns:

"Truck crime is getting worse and the criminals are getting craftier and more violent. We have even heard stories of crooks injecting sleep inducing gas through the night heaters of parked up trucks so they can render drivers helpless while they break in to their cabs."

This is a very real and concerning issue, thieves are willing to use violence and nasty tactics to get what they want. Have you heard of any extreme freight crime incidents? Or do you have any advice you could offer vulnerable driver?

On Tuesday 10 November UK Border Agency (UKBA) officers discovered eight hand guns and 200 rounds of ammunition in a HGV at Dover port... oh and thats not to mention the 9,600 cigarettes also packed into the lorry.

This haul is the first of its kind I have personally written about, and its strikes me as rather frightening, because inevitably it's fuelling the gun crime epidemic currently circulating the UK.

Where are the weapons coming from and who is ordering them? All we know in this case it that 48-year old driver, Vitalijus Tauskela, a Lithuanian national, has been charged with attempted smuggling. He was remanded in custody to appear at Dover Magistrates Court on 10 December.

On the same date, 53-year old Lithuanian HGV driver Viktor Maksimov will appear before Dover magistrates for committal proceedings. He has been charged with attempting to smuggle £440,000 worth of cocaine through the Port Of Ramsgate.

These hauls are worth big bucks, but undoubtedly they will cost the UK in terms of lives!

Although there were only 50 respondents, LSN's survey results hammered home the message: HGV crime is a big problem in the area.

For the 12 months to September 2009, companies questioned revealed the biggest threats to their firm:

Fuel thefts: 29%
Theft from premises: 22%
Theft from parked truck: 22%
Theft in transit: 15%
Hijack: 6% Staff thefts: 6%

The estimated cost of crime over the period at the 50 firms was £2.16m.

David Stockdale, BCRC head of unit.

LSN is a division of South Yorkshire-based Business Crime Reduction Centre (BCRC) and is encouraging truckers to join the scheme free of charge as a way of sharing information on freight crime.

Investigations by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) led to 41-year old Southport-based Darren Hunter who had masterminded the trip, and he pleaded guilty to being involved in the scandalous plot.

Today (23 October) at Newport Crown Court, 53-year old HGV driver Russell Carter from Cardiff was jailed for life for murder and three counts of attempted murder. He brutally beat and strangled his 45-year old boss to death at the Driverline247 premises in Pontypool, and doused three other employees in petrol before setting the offices alight.

Twisted, sick, barbaric and upsetting this case certainly is.. but it has emerged that Carter (who has US/British citizenship) already had two armed robbery convictions in the US, so why I question, was he free to murder?

The dispute was over £3,000 Carter claimed he was owed by the firm. In my previous job (retail) lets just say there were a few issues with my boss... wages not always paid on time, arguments over holiday pay and just a sombre mood felt by all staff there. I confess there was a desire to throttle the boss in question, but it was never more than a fantasy. In a dramatic comparison, because Carter felt he was hard-done by (aren't we all at times,) he murdered 45-year old Kingsley Monk and put three others through a terrifying ordeal.

Judge Nicholas Cooke QC says: "These crimes were acts of callous wickedness, cruelty and inhumanity which beggar belief. You were prepared to kill- then burn to cover your tracks."

Carter was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in jail, so will be 83 when he qualifies for parole.

So as a comparison, Janaszczy's desire to stuff his truck over capacity is not legal and seriously has the potential to cause a major accident.

Now I like sweets as much as the next person, actually scrap that, I love sweets, but perhaps not as much as the sweet-tooth offenders who stole 35 boxes of treats from a lorry parked in Lancit Haulage's yard in Lansil Walk, Lancaster.

Goodies including jelly babies, marshmallows, popcorn and humbugs were stolen from the truck on October 3 between 6.38-6.57pm.

Lancashire Police have released the following CCTV images and say they would like to trace the two men pictured in order to eliminate them from their enquiries.

The thieves are thought to have parked a vehicle on Lansil Way before the robbery.

Just last week operations director at Enfield-based drinks distributor Tradeteam, John Crosk warned me the firm had had issues with 'Hop Ups,' which is where opportunists try to grab goods and run, mostly wines & sprits. However this case sounds reminiscent of a child in Woolworths helping themselves to a handful of Pick N Mix without visiting the till.

At the risk of using an extreme example, we all know what happened to Woolies...so regardless of the size of a theft, one thing's for sure, innocent small family-run firms such as Lancit don't deserve to be victims of thoughtless petty criminals.
