The Driver CPC is being forced upon us

With regard to Rosemary Thew's 'opinion' on the Driver CPC (Commercial Motor 19 February) - I hardly know where to begin.

When I started to read the column I was hoping for some answers. I really want to know how I will benefit.

The only reason we will have the Driver CPC is because the European Directive tells us we must and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent (or change) this.

The 35 hours (that we must attend only) are more than double the periodic training a 'jumbo jet' pilot has to undertake to maintain his licence. So will we be better qualified than a commercial airline pilot and able to demand equivalent salaries?

Individual companies have their own 'periodic training' (or induction) tailored to the nature of their business and they instigate it as they see fit. They don't need the European Parliament to tell them what to do.This directive once again is for the lowest common denominator (the minority) in our industry, and yet we all must suffer because of a few idiots.

Periodic training should be driven by the insurance companies - they know who's who.

What about periodic training for MEPs and chief executives of the DSA?

John English has been trading for 20 years, mainly on international work but more recently in the UK. He runs four Scania artic trucks, all unmarked white, and his drivers are all British drivers with around 20 years' experience.
