Hippies v Banger Racers - Will's Roadtransport Revival

Ford%20v%20VW%20low.JPG

Have you been put off buying the economical VW because of an optical illusion, or do you just hate hippies?
I have to admit that this is a bloody good advert, and yes I would never have believed that the T2 Transporter could carry anywhere near as much as a Mk1 Transit. In actual fact, according to this mid 1970s advert, the payload and volume is almost exactly the same.
Volkswagen then goes on to list a number of reasons why the similarity ends there:
The VW rates 24.8mpg. Can your Transit match that?
The VW is extremely reliable.
It is cheaper to buy than a Transit of similar specifications
It retains a higher resale value etc etc
But personally, despite being rubbished by Volkswagen, I would have still chosen the Transit every time. It was a proper man’s van, a British icon and every East End gangster’s favourite getaway van.
Those people who like Transporters however might want to check out my report from the 60th anniversary birthday party, while I’ve dug out a great van banger racing video to show the Transit at its best.
