New Mercedes-Benz engine for Euro5 Sprinter

With the the Euro5 deadline fast approaching for CVs over 3,500kg, and for lighter vans two years later, Mercedes-Benz has launched a new engine family to meet the new standards and beyond. The all new OM651 is available in three ratings, in vehicles designated (in the case of 3.5-tonners) 310, 313 and 313CDI. The 2,143cc long-stroke engines produce approximately 10% more power and torque than the comparable predecessors, but with the improved emissions and better fuel economy. They feature twin Lanchester balancer shafts, higher pressure common rail injection and, in the two higher ratings, twin sequential turbochargers. Emission control is by modified EGR system together with a close mounted oxidising catalyst and diesel particulate filter combined in one unit.

A new six-speed manual transmission and an improved version of the OM642 2,987cc V6 with 440Nm complete the line-up. The new drivelines will be standard on all Sprinters from July production, with a price realignment in the range of €400 either side of current prices.
