More Navistar: this time, South Africa

$40 million later, and Navistar has a 350 unit a month assembly facility in South Africa.
A smart move; whilst everything is far from rosey in the South African garden at present, it is, in comparison, a veritable shangri la for truck sales people. By which we mean that one or two are getting sold there.

This report gives the story, but a couple of things aren't covered. Does Navistar have a launch customer - think Shaanxi and Supergroup - and how tickled will MAN be should Maxxforce end up in South Africa?

A couple of other observations: seems a bit strange that there's not one mention of CAT here; one would have thought that this would have been right in its target zone. Interesting too to speculate on where MWM might fit in; it's not that huge a jaunt from Brazil to South Africa - vid VW and its Constellation

Moreover, South Africa - right hand drive market - where else might these trucks be going?

Michael Yamnitz:

Ok, International Truck is back in South Africa, having first arrived there in 1921, but what of TYCO?
TYCO started assembling International trucks at Benon in 1987. They became 100% owned by Imperial Holdings in 1996, and established 12+ TYCO Truck Centres for sales and service by about 2005. By that time they were also assembling and selling DAF and Renault trucks.
Did NAV simply take over the manufacturing and continue TYCO Truck Centres as sales and service? (IMHO, that probably would be the best course of action)
As far as Right Hand Drive goes, how about future sourcing of major components from Mahindra International?

Michael Yamnitz:

Oops, I left the "i" off Benoni.

Dear sir Sir/Madam

I heard that you sell good quality trucks. I've been adviced to buy a 3XL Trail and horse or an Eagle truck with a comminse motor. I don't have good knowledge about trucks. I'm looking at something about 10-13 tonne. Could you please email me the prices of these trucks and some images if possible
