More from that serial dealmaker Navistar and the news that it is to establish a JV with the recently unbankrupted American LaFrance
Don't ask us the terms of the deal, because we don't know them. According to the press release, the new venture will target vocational markets such as refuse and construction. Leaving aside the rather obvious observation that now does not seem like such a good time to be launching a construction vehicle just about anywhere, we also find ourselves wondering about the Navistar - CAT deal which also mentioned construction-centric vehicles. CAT, incidentally, saw its stock up by around 3.5 per cent today. Given that the US construction industry is somewhat sluggish at present, Navistar does seem to be rather keen on vehicles appropriate for use therein, and may be getting ready to take the fight to Mack, which can reasonably lay claim to some pre-eminence in this sector.
Of course, Jim Hebe did some time at American LaFrance, and is now earning his corn at Navistar, meaning that there is what amounts to a family connection between the two. Whether or not this has anything to do with anything we know not.
